epic576
Hi guys and gals, I've found this what I think is Fender P in a local pawn shop. Noodled around on it and enjoyed it. The neck felt amazing and the weight was really light. I do have some concerns however, the serial number doesn't check out and the neck plate is blank. With my limited Fender knowledge I guess it's either a parts bass or some sort of Precision Special . Could someone confirm my suspicions and whether its worth the £300 (give or take) asking price? inate_hex
It certainly looks like an 80's special to me not sure on the price though.
Byo
It certainly looks like the 80's Jazz Bass Special that Doug Mckagan (or however you write his name) from Guns&Roses used to play in the day minus de j-pup. I am not sure about the bridge, on the photo it looks quite chunky compared to the standard Fender ones, but the paintwork matches the 80's ones (kind of perloid finish). If it is a pawn shop, you may be able to negociate a little on the price. Most importantly is how you feel about the bass, if you like it and it is up your street it is worth purchasing. Now a days, 300 quid can hardly get you a brand new Squier... Edited April 28, 2015 by Byo
Bassassin
Serial's consistent with mid-80s MIJ, which is what it looks like to me. Jon.
Shockwave
For that money, it's a pretty good price. Not amazingly earth shattering, but I doubt you'll find that sort of price in another shop.
inate_hex
On fenders website that serial number dates it between 84 and
epic576
I've done another serial check, ticking in Made in Japan, and now it seems to be an Fujigen, 84-87 made. I'm thinking of trading in my Ibanez 5 string which i hindsight was a impulse buy, even though it was 2nd hand.
ras52
I would.

epic576
Much appreciated guys, because it's so light could I hazard a guess at basswood body?
throwoff
It might be chambered, A friend of mine has a Fender HM bass from around that period with a chambered body, it's silly light.
Ziphoblat
...or chambered basswood. They use a lot of it in the MIJ Fenders. Nothing wrong with a good piece of basswood (I think they make EBMM Bongos with it).
throwoff
Basswood is a fine wood for building basses. The clue is in the name!
epic576
Oh I'm not bashing basswood. Just can't find a spec sheet that isn't in Japanese.
epic576
Well I've played it plugged in and given it an inspection. The E string keeps popping out the nut the A string is out the saddle. Chipped body and headstock. As well as all this the input jack is loose the frets aren't in great condition and the tone knob doesn't turn. I'm sure I can knock down the £300 price Edited April 29, 2015 by epic576

Does look like a Fender to me.....
throwoff
£250 then a proper set up to likely replace the nut and you are onto a winner.
epic576
Ended up being £100 with part-ex, not just needs a set up http://basschat.co.uk/topic/261072-nbd-japanese-p/
Roger2611
Cracking basses, I picked up a beaten up example recently for a similar price to what yours was offered at, I am really impressed with it, it has a huge output, it sounds and plays as well as any Precision I have ever played...enjoy
