Iain
Spill the beans! It can't be any worse than THE DONKEY SPOKE. Can it?
Actually, no, well, maybe... looking at some on here it's not really that bad... just doesn't sit well. Spydabyte There, I said it. Recent gig the board outside read "SpiderBite" which was slightly less crap. We're all around 40, it's a rock covers band. Sounds we're still in college. There was a band playing the same venue the night after... "Bees of Burden" I know nothing about them but already know they're cool.
MoonBassAlpha
Came across a band on Myspace once called sh*te and Onions, I think they were from Ireland.

Maude
I was on a band called 'The Bobblehats' for a number of years. We tried to change the name a few times but it just stuck with us somehow. Even played a 'last ever gig',stopped for a while, came back with a new name and new songs. First pub we were booked to play had a big poster up when we got there, "Back by popular demand, The Bobblehats"

tauzero
Sorry Tauzero, you misunderstood my post, I know how the band came about the name, I'm querying the origins of the phrase itself.
How about http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/lead-balloon.html then?
Thanks, as that actually agrees with what I've been getting at. Original - "the stocks went UP like a lead balloon" makes perfect sense, whereas, going down that has passed into usage doesn't.

KingBollock
I remember looking over the bookings board at a rehearsal studio and, right next to Black Sabbath, there was a band called Funky Plankton, which tickled me. I once helped an artist friend of mine design a CD cover for a band called Psychotic Sand Embroidery.

Funky Dunky
Spandau Ballet Queen - nobody ever questions it, but it's a terrible name for a rock band. Pantera - do they come from an era of pants? Chumbawamba - I believe it was in response to bands called things like Kajagoogoo (another stupid name) but it's still really annoying to say/hear. Which brings me to Goo Goo Dolls. That's just dumb. You're grown men, but your name suggests a Japanese girl band. Scouting For Girls is a topper though, regardless of its subtle cunning. But it suits. Lame name, lame band IMO. Funky Dunky
I was in a band and I hated when people asked me the name. I apologised in advance, explained that I didn't name them and then told them the name. They would then look at me, puzzled, and tell me it was a terrible name for a band. Then they'd ask me what it meant, and explaining the origin of the name was met with more bemusement than the name itself. I can't even bring myself to say it here in case my dear mate ever finds out how much I detested the name of his band.
chriswareham
Spandau Ballet
It's from the spasms of a man during hanging - from the Spandau prison in Berlin. I think Tony Hadley is something of a history buff, which shows in the lyrics of "To Cut A Long Story Short" which describe a soldier losing his mind in the first world war. (Edited to admit their debut album is something of a guilty pleasure - once they started wearing sensible clothes they went totally mince though).
It's a lovely thought and I wish it were true, but Pantera is Spanish for Panther. Pretty lame, really. I wont mention the band I play with now, not because I don't like the name - I do, but after almost 3 years, dozens of gigs and countless reminders, they still have somebody elses name as Bass Player on the websites. Beer of the Bass
I don't think Pantera can have come from the Era of Pants, since they mostly wore shorts IIRC...
discreet
Back in the early 70s I remember seeing Opportunity Knocks with Hughie Green... featuring a band called 'Fags 'N' Matches'. So when Hughie said, 'For Fags 'N' Matches... opportunity knocks...' even as a young lad I remember thinking, 'no, it doesn't - that's the worst band name in the history of band names'... of course this was decades before Guns 'N' Roses, in itself a pretty crass band name. IMHO. Edit: No, I didn't dream it - they reformed last year! 4-string-thing
I've been in a few bands with crap names: Private Party, Iron Python, Lovelorn and Rick Lamoure & The Corduroy Kings to name a few.... I'm now in Dr K's Gastric Band, which let's face it, is not much better! Edited May 11, 2015 by 4-string-thing
hollywoodrox
In reply to the person 2ith a band called spidabyte, there is a band called spiderbait who did a cover of black betty by ram jam, I think its on the ghostrider film soundtrack
MoonBassAlpha
The biggest gig I ever played was depping for a student band supporting the Vapours at the height of their pomp. Temporary Floor Hazard World of Carpets was an Oxford band, apparently even worse than their name.
Bassassin
Back when I lived down south, there was a band on the Kent circuit called Uncle Lumpy & The Fish Doctors. Which is either genius or ludicrous. About 15 years ago I played in a rock covers duo called Hideous Things - which I might have actually suggested myself... Didn't do us any harm, we were stupidly busy for a couple of years. Jon. MarkW
As a teenager I did a brief stint with a band called The Nun F*ckers. One of their most popular numbers was 'Anal Intruder' - a romantic little ditty that was enough to get anyone's foot tapping. I now play with a band called Ticket 415. Not sure that's a very great improvement...
