dave_bass5
Oooo, i didn't know we had a MB thread. Here's my F1, brought off Clarky during the summer. It was supposed to replace my GB Streamliner (and has) as a straight swap but for a while i couldn't decide what to keep so ended up buying it. This is my old SA450, my first and probably best MB head. And this was me just showing off at a gig lol. No point having a nice backup if it doesn't get used so i used one head per set. I also wanted to hear just how close the two heads sounded.
Linus27
Blimey Dave, I never knew you had the F1 in red. Uber jealous now Never knew you had an Epi either. I thought you had a Schroder
dave_bass5
I was never interested in the red until I saw it in the flesh. It's darker than most of the pics I saw online. I grew to like it almost instantly. The Epi went just after this gig as it really wasnt working out volume wise. It was replaced with the 1212L that doesnt sound quite as nice but does the job without complaining.

I'm more than happy with my Promethean for now, but when I get out playing again, I'll need to go for a bigger rig and miss the sound of my LittleMark 250. Would be interested to hear your thoughts. Its not quite as thick, and i guess not as warm sounding but seems to be a bit louder and due to the cleaner lower end seems to sound more defined and articulate to my ears. In a band setting i dont really hear any difference other than a slightly quicker attack and slightly less muddy low end. To me it still sounds like a MB head. dave_bass5
No problem. While i never intended to get a F1 its working out fine. I do miss having the extra EQ the SA450 has, so i do want a F500 at some point but as i mostly run the MB heads flat i dont really see me needing to upgrade any time soon. One thing i have noticed is that since getting the F1 ive stopped using my BDDI all the time. Before i was using it to add a little "something" to the tone, not dirt or distortion as such, just a slight gain and low end boost, now i find the F1 has that and i hardly use the BDDI. If you want to come over and try it at some point let me know. Edited December 20, 2011 by dave_bass5

I used to run my LittleMark 250 completely flat too, I just loved the sound that came out of that little box, so if the F1 is similar, with even better punch, I'd be a very happy Eude! Cheers for the offer of a go, I might just take you up on that next year if that's cool Eude
dave_bass5
Ive never played a MB head that, to me, sounded like something else if that makes sense. I love the basic tone they produce and especially the filters. I find the EQ is a bit subtle but thats not a problems as i dont want to really tone shape my sound, just tweak it for different venues/stages. I find i tweak less with the F1 than i did with the other heads, especially on hollow wooden stages. My cab is pretty coloured so maybe i dont hear the heads at thier best but they seem to work for me, no matter what bass i use. I did try and break free of the MB tone this year but as you can see, i came back pretty quick. Just PM me if you ever want to give it a try out, i dont mind if you want to take it for a gig, as long as im not using it thats fine. I kinda felt like "my tone", although I imagine it's a lot of other folks' tone too I used to just plug in and play, rarely had to make any adjustments whatsoever, which is always nice! I definitely will PM you next year matey, thanks for your help Eude
dave_bass5
No problem, glad to help (and talk about MB heads) I do think part of my MB love is that they work well with my Schroeder cab (s), in fact most cabs by the sound of it, not so a few other heads ive tried through them. Linus27
I find that with my MarkBass 121H combo that I can just run pretty much any bass flat. The thing I dial to about 11 o clock is the low mids. I never touch the filters as it sounds good flat.
dave_bass5
I have found i use less filter now i have the F1, but a touch of VPF helps tame the mid hump in my 1212L. I think thats probably why i like the BDDI as it also helps tame the mids. Edited December 20, 2011 by dave_bass5
