I own a Taiwanese BB5000 and I'm keeping a relaxed eye out for a BB1100S. I know Yamaha built these basses in both Japan and Taiwan, but does it make much of a difference which country they come from when it comes to quality / sound / playability?

I'm not bothered about where a bass is made so long as it's a good instrument; I just want to know if it's really worth holding out for a Japanese-made one!

You just answered your own question, I reckon :)

I have a 86 Jap model and they are indeed cracking basses. I haven`t played a Taiwanese one but I would image it would be a very decent bass also.

If I recall correctly my old BB1100s was made in Taiwan. This was in the days before country of origin meant anything to me (late 80s), but it was a great bass, very versatile, great player, and a really good workhorse, I must have done some 500 gigs on that bass over a 4 year period with no backup and it never let me down. If the Japanese ones are better then they`re really something.
