Dick Venom & The Terrortones just spent the last 3 days laying down tracks for our first full-length album...

We went back to JT Soar in Nottingham where we recorded our last release The MonsterPussy Sessions, recording mostly live with minimal overdubs and edits.

First things first - some basses:

I ended up using all of these except the fretless Gus and the Yamaha, but the red Gus and the Warwick Starbass were the mainstays of the sessions.

Some guitars and amps:

From the drum seat:

And actually getting some music recorded:

Listening to the playback:

Mr Venom working out that all-important glockenspiel part:

After all of that we got 14 songs recorded plus alternative versions of 2 for possible singles. The next couple of weeks will be spent listening to the initial rough mixes before we go back for mixing.

Will do. We're aiming to get it out September/October time and hopefully have a UK and German tour to promote it.

And here's a panoramic shot of the live room from Mr Venom's perspective:

14 songs in 3 days?

Impressive B)

Thanks!

It's a combination of being well rehearsed and recording mostly live with minimal overdubs - some guitar, vocals, theremin and percussion.

Nice one!

Looking forward to hearing this mate, I imagine the only hope you have of capturing the live chaos would be to track as close to live as possible, you lot don't strike me as the click track type :D

14 tracks in 3 days is still none too shabby though, great work!

Thanks guys!

TBH when you're rehearsing and gigging at least once every week it's not that difficult to record 14 songs in 3 days and with the briefness of the average Terrortones song that's just under 40 minutes worth of actual music. And we didn't need to consume too much coffee doing it. Each day was 9 hours from 9 in the morning until 6 in the evening and half of the first day was spent setting up and getting all the basic sounds sorted and with food breaks there was only about 20 hours of actual recording.

Being in the studio with the Terrortones is a refreshing change from some of my previous recording attempts, one in particular where I spent at least 1 hour every day for over a year working on four songs for an EP that never got released because the band split up before it was finished. Home recording might be fun cheap and accessible these days but recording in the studio where you have a set amount of time and money certainly makes you more efficient.

51m0n, we have actually used click tracks in the past with our original drummer who was a lot more technical and a bit of a perfectionist. However before stepping into the studio we did practice the songs with a without a click to see which ones benefitted from having a constant tempo and which ones needed to speed up and slow down. The VampireMan and SpiderQueen EPs were done like this and IIRC about half the tracks were done to a click and half free tempo.

Got to get me one of those Warwick Star basses, always sound great on your live clips and they look so damned good as well. Seem like a lot of bass for the money.

Thanks. When Thomann were selling of the last of the MiK models they most certainly were. I'm not so sure that the soon come MiG Pro Series are going to be as good VFM - if what I'm hearing is right then they are going to be quite a bit more than the original full price of the MiK, and the Rockbass version has little in common other than the shape.

Just back from Monday's studio session.

Recorded a few extra overdubs and then got to work on the mixing. We've got the basic sound sorted for all the tracks and have started detailed mixing on each individual song. Just been listening to the first two (almost) finished mixes.

Very happy with the results. Back again on Wednesday to hopefully get everything apart from the very fine tuning done.

Just have to find a pressing plant that doesn't have a 6 month turnaround time for vinyl...

Good luck with that.

You guys going for any coloured vinyl at all?

After a long hot day in the studio we have 9 songs mixed (bar one or two little tweaks). We also had some fun with some last minute overdubs and a guest vocalist for one of the songs. We'll be back in just over a week's time to do the final tracks and then fine tune everything. Then it's off for mastering.

Looks like we've found a pressing plant that can turn the album around in time for October. Unfortunately it probably won't be coloured vinyl this time around.

Well the album is mixed, mastered and off to the pressing plant.

It's going to be 13 tracks long and clocks in at just under 35 minutes. There will probably be a taster in the form of an alternative version of one of the tracks available for download some time in September. Album launch date TBC...
