uk_lefty
If you were playing country music what would be your ideal bass for tone and looks? Please also suggest a cheap option! I'm off to play with one soon, thinking of getting a spongy mute under the flats on my P Bass
Dazed
Sounds like the way to go to me.

andydye
P bass with flats will do your classic country / country rock type thing, add foam mute you can get motown
Subbeh
Cowpoke Precision would be my choice, great looks for country and the added versatility of the J pickup. They're not particularly expensive but can be tricky to find.
CokeyW
I find FretWraps more flexible than a foam mute as you can adjust the amount of mute more precisely.
chris_b
Old country or modern country? They're not the same. Plough through the many YouTube vids of Michael Rhodes and you'll find that country bass these days is full of Laklands, Jazzes, Exotic and Sadowsky basses. You do not want a dead thud of a bass sound any more.
chris_b
Jim Reeves or Jason Aldean? Also, there are a lot of 5 string basses in Country these days.
Cat Burrito
I can't help with modern (90s onwards) country but the P-bass with flats / foam is what I would favour. Or an upright.
alyctes
Cimar P-type
Highfox
I get mileage and looks out of my 51 P with flats on for that type of stuff. I have also used a Ray as well, so guess it's what exact type of sound you're after.

Well, really..! Some people..! Can't even post a light-hearted aside without someone picking over the bones of every tiny detail..! Honestly..! You'd think folks would have something better to do, no..?
JapanAxe
Another vote for P-bass. I play modern country and I use flats, but you may want to go for rounds if you favour a brighter tone. Either way you want a round, warm core to your sound.

JimBobTTD
This place does spongey mutes. I have no experience of them; I found them whilst looking for mutes for a 5-string. http://www.bassmute.com/
ChunkyMunky
A P-bass would do the trick nicely. If it's a bit more modern, I would just slap some new strings on. I doubt anyone in the audience is going to think; "Wow, what a great bass line. I would've preferred if he used D'addarios!" whilst downing a pint. lee4
I use my Status in a country-rock band. I find dialling out high mids and boosting low mids works well.

merello
Brad Paisley's 'This Is Country Music' makes apt of mentioning a Fender Precision Bass. Normally his bass player uses a Crook bass though:
