iRig Keys / iPad question

Recommended Posts

Alright folks,

Might be a daft question, but I am looking into buying a iRig Keyboard to add some synth bass / organ sounds to my band.

My setup would be - iRig Keyboard into iRig PowerBridge into iPad2 . . . . Is there any other output options other than the mini jack socket on the iPad for live use? Surely there must be a better what to get a quarter inch jack output?
Or is this setup more for studio recording?

Anyone got any other views on a better compact setup?

Cheers

I use the iOdock II which gives you all the access you need, midi, audio, usb. Slide your iPad into it and plug in with the 30 pin connector. Comes with a lightning connector too. Works well with any midi keyboard.

I'm not sure a separate dock will work as it will rely on connecting through the lighting port, but in your proposed setup you are already using the iPads lightning port to connect to the PowerBridge?

That has to be the coooolest iPad keyboard I've ever seen!
If they make an 88 (or 73) key one it'll be on my "to buy" list.

They can be put together to make keyboards as long as you want, as they go edge to edge.

Now that's clever! Where do you get them in the UK?

Well, I got mine from kickstarter, so they have only just ramped up production which means it may be a short while before they are available in the UK, but probably not that long.
The company have taken ages to get them out, but now they have, I have been very impressed with the build standard.

How robust is that? It's a pretty nifty idea but is it durable enough for live use?

IME almost none of the modern computer connections are secure or reliable to be used outside of the home/office environment. IME everything needs to be locking with absolutely no play between the plug and socket otherwise at some point it will fail in the most spectacular way possible mid-performance.

What apps do you all use on your iPads?

We're wanting to add specific sounds (ie Girls and Boys Blur synth) but not got the first clue how to do it.

I got Korg Gadget a few months back. Good fun app & can make a decent song in it, but not sure if it would be my choice live.
I made this in it...

Moog Animoog however, is a fantastic bit of kit. But I'm not sure if you'd get as great a sound with a hardware controller as you do with the touchscreen.
Another one under that category is Akai iMPC, but they do a controller for that called Fly.

Alchemy is another good synth.

THere's many good ones from Korg, Arturia & several others, but I've not tried them.
