karlfer
Our sound guy has put an appeal up to identify this purported 1951 amp. Any ideas will be gratefully passed on to him. Cheers in advance (ps if you know what it is, well, I thought I was sad ) Karl. yorick
First thoughts, maybe a Silvertone... Can't see anything exactly like it though. Any idea of speaker configuration or mains voltage?
Bill Fitzmaurice
You probably would have to open it up to find identifying markings. It's probably not a Silvertone, unless there was a UK company that used that name. In the US Silvertone was a store brand sold by Sears-Roebuck, many rebadged Coral and Danelectro, but not in the 1950s.
No whippersnappers should have the knowledge . I thought about editing the title then thought CBA. I will ask our beloved soundman for more details. I hope I have the life expectancy to get a reply.
Mykesbass
Could try Mr Foxen who I think has gone from BC but can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ampstack/351966881575839?pnref=lhc

pete.young
I've never seen one like it, but it does remind me of early Watkins .
Happy Jack
Looks very Fenton-Weill to me, leaning towards Bird.
yorks5stringer
Looks a bit too modern to be 1951 in my totally uneducated opinion, as it looks like the old Dansette wooden box with vinyl covering constrruction which was early 60's if my memory serves me well, likewise the plastic handle. But I could be totally and embarrassingly wrong....
bartelby
Could try Mr Foxen who I think has gone from BC but can be found here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ampstack/351966881575839?pnref=lhc
He still reads the forum from time to time. But he's facebook page would probably be a safer/quicker bet

karlfer
Thanks guys. As predicted no rapid response from sound guy Dansette was a word that sprung into my tiny brain.
KK Jale
Dansette's a good call actually as their record players did use that exact type of ICI-made salt-and-pepper grille cloth for a time. As did Marshall, around '63-'64. I spent a bit of time on this and none of the usual non-famous suspects seem to fit - Elpico, Supertone, Grampian, Shaftesbury, Futurama, Geloso, Eko, etc etc.

karlfer
From sound guy, "surprisingly state of the art , 2 x 12A7, 1 x EL84, 1 x EZ80. 1 x ELAC 8x5 speaker with input transformer. Tone,Volume,Beat,Speed Controls. (Tremelo like effect). The valves in it, are the basis of many modern amps, they we only designed 5 years before this Heath Robinson. Might be an early Watkins Westminister who started in 1951? Only thing inside is the the date 2nd March 1951. Serial Number 1141. 240V AC." KK Jale
So could I, as it looks early '60s to me too....! I think the date is a red herring or a mis-read. Wiki says EL84s were developed in 1953, EZ80s in 1954. Reboxed Watkins Westminster, or a homebuilt copy, is a possibility... we may never know... sigh.
