Shambo Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 (edited) I was watching Sounds Of The 80's on the iplayer the other day when a rather youthful REM appeared on a clip garnered from the Old Grey Whistle Test. The song in question, Pretty Persuasion, left me cold, as did most of the performance apart from the last few bars when Stipe seemed to wake up, but what peaked my interest was the bass being played by Mike Mills. I've attached a couple of blurry stills and will attempt to add the youtube vid, (footage starts at 0;25). Please, put me out of my misery and name that bass. Thanks for playing. alyctes Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Don't know (no surprise . The headstock is vaguely Peavey-ish, but the big scratchplate? Don't know. Quote
PlungerModerno Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I don't know the model - but it reminds me of an Ibanez roadstar: But the pickguard looks more like a hofner galaxie! Quote
Shambo Posted May 24, 2015 Author Posted May 24, 2015
Looks like a a Guild Pilot to me
I think we have a winner. Mills seems to have previous for playing a Guild Pilot. Mystery solved. Thank you. Quote
Shambo Posted July 28, 2016 Author Posted July 28, 2016 Back from the dead! Another name that bass request. This time Mr Graham Alexander of the Bar Kays playing something very funky and 80's... but what the hell is it? Note the matching white guitar. TrevorR Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 I'd vote for the combination of a P bass and a band saw... Quote
BigRedX Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016
I'd vote for the combination of a P bass and a band saw...
You're probably right, although I think they were probably inspired by the La Baye 4x2 guitar and bass. Quote
Shambo Posted July 29, 2016 Author Posted July 29, 2016 It is similar to the La Baye 4x2 apart from the head stock and this body looks a little bigger. I thought it might be a Westone but can't find any matching images online. Quote
Bassassin Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 Don't think there was ever a Westone like that. I'm with the Precision-meets-bandsaw theory. Quote
Mykesbass Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 I froze the video and although the quality was very poor there was a hint of Aria Pro to the headstock. Quote

fretlessguy Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016
I froze the video and although the quality was very poor there was a hint of Aria Pro to the headstock.
I would agree that it favors the Aria Cat bass. Guild Pilot or Peavey Fury with a replacement pick guard is what I am leaning toward. Quote
