scrumpymike
Just Googled Sympathy For The Devil as may be having to play it again soon after a rest of several decades. Couple of interesting (to me anyway!?) things came up. First of all, how much better Bill Wyman's original groove was than the Darryl Jones re-invention. Secondly, what was that cool-looking bass that Bill W was playing on the 'Rock & Roll Circus' vid? Looked like a violin bass that took some steroids, got a Vox headstock transplant, and joined the circus. A brief on-line search revealed that the head-stock was the clue: it was a 1968 Vox V273 Astro IV, also referred to as "the Beggars Banquet bass". And I want one. Old Man Riva
Keef played bass on the studio version. There are a few Stones tracks where Bill is off making the tea when the bass in being done - Emotional Rescue is Ronnie Wood; Fingerprint File is Mick Taylor ditto I just Want to See His Face. scrumpymike
"There are a few Stones tracks where Bill is off making the tea when the bass in being done..." Isn't that just typical of the way us bass players are under-valued within the band. I bet when Mick Taylor went off to make the tea the lads politely declined Bill's offer to do the lead break and waited til he came back . miles'tone
Keef played bass on the studio version
Just been watching the studio sessions for "Sympathy". Yeah it's Keef on bass (nice P bass) and poor Bill's been relegated to shaker. Worth a watch! http://youtu.be/nxyDrHzoIH8 Edited June 2, 2015 by miles'tone
scrumpymike
Interesting to see how the song found its way to what is definitely the right tempo. You have to wonder why Bill was side-lined tho - surely that bass part wasn't beyond his capabilities at that point?!
