alexclaber Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Try a boost around 400Hz and 2.5kHz and a scoop in between. Try having either your neck or bridge pickup backed off to let the growl from a dominant pickup come through. Alex Quote
MuseMatt Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 a boss obd-3 could help you achieve this sound Quote
alexclaber Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Didn't get as far as the solo'd bit - the ODB-3 has that kind of nasty s/s distortion though it's often lost once the rest of the band is playing. Try cranking the gain on your head, that may give you a similar distortion. Alex Quote

If you're already going for a bright fresh string sound with a pick and plenty of growl from the instrument adding a distortion pedal is arguably an unnecessary detail, live. Alex Quote

waynepunkdude Posted September 12, 2008 Author Posted September 12, 2008 Cheers for the suggestions I will try some of this stuff tonight. I used my P last night and it sounded a lot better. Should I ditch the Fender for the Squire? Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 I played with it again last night but I just don't think it is for me. I need something brighter, what do you guys think I should trade it for? Quote
Exile252 Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 (edited) You need to cut the mid, and bring up the lows and highs. I'll try typing out a diagram (it'll probably suck) of what I have my 7 band Eq at. - - - - - - - Kinda hard to show. Another way to describe it is it looks like The Rock (yes the wrestler) doing the peoples eyebrow, (Raising an eyebrow) Wow, my diagram doesn't work hehe. Edited September 13, 2008 by Exile252 Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 Cheers buddy but I have tried so many things. I just find it really clunky and it's not for me, quite disappointed. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 Looking at an Ampeg B2 might trade it in Quote
MuseMatt Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 another idea: change your strings? Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 Done that twice in fact. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 The really annoying thing is I'm getting an awesome tone out of my 5 String Westly and my Badger 10 Watt amp combined cost £30 Quote
Exile252 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Just thinking, it could be your Ashdown. Maybe not the Trace. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 14, 2008 Author Posted September 14, 2008 Hmmm I haven't tried it through any other cab you may have a point Quote
Exile252 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 (edited) mhm, I just remembered people talk about Ashdowns like Marmite, either you love them or don't. If you know anyone close by on here I'm sure they'd let you try your head in their Cab (mhm, you could make a sexual reference out of that one) I get a crisp punchy tone out of my Trace, low and high with no mid mud. Edited September 14, 2008 by Exile252 Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 I really hope this is just a hick up but I don't think it is. Quote
waynepunkdude Posted September 16, 2008 Author Posted September 16, 2008 Would a compressor help? Quote
Exile252 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Dunno, might do, don't think so though. Compressors are there to stop you bass changing volumes, keeps an instrument in check when playing with a band. Or something like that. I'd suggest just going for a Trace of similar size to your ashdown. They both seem to be going really cheap, which could be handy. Quote
MuseMatt Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 I remember being able to get a similar sound out of my ash'n trace with my podx3... using a red comp (mxr dyna comp) simulation. i think you should try some gear out... if u ask me it's not the trace! Quote
KevB Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Well for a few years I've been using my Trace 1X15 combo with and without extension speakers with the compression at about 2 o'clock, preshape always on and a nice smiley face EQ (I know it's become unfashionable to be smiley but it works for me). HOWEVER my biggest (and relatively cheap fix) improvement in quality of tone was after buying a Hartke Bass Attack DI/tone pedal. Never gig without it now, you can hear the lows and highs, nice mids the, the lot. I'd challenge anyone not to be able to get a good sound from it. Quote

waynepunkdude Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 Cheers for all your help guys but I have decided it's not for me I'm trading it. Quote
