1976fenderhead Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015
+1, it's why I sold mine. I contacted Doug and got instructions on how to add a gain pot, bought the pot and everything but then chickened out of modding a brand new expensive pedal with my lack of soldering skills!
Yup, if there was a gain knob I'd have kept it because I really liked the character of the fuzz(es) in it. IMO it's a major design flaw. Quote
Sibob Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 Hmmm, I'm not sure I'd call it a design flaw......a design choice really. Lots of Fuzz pedals just have a preset amount of Gain/Fuzz, the assumption is you've bought a Fuzz pedal.....why would you not want it to sound as fuzzy/gainy as possible? Si Quote
dannybuoy Posted June 12, 2015 Posted June 12, 2015 All those pedals with preset gain/fuzz are just as equally flawed though. I've never found a dirt pedal with a preset gain level that I found usable - except the Diabolik, but at least that has a squish knob which does pretty much the same thing. My high output basses sent it over the edge to the point where it was overloaded and did not sound great, so I had to back off the volume on the bass. Also some fuzzes can sound great at low/medium gain - e.g. my TAFM sounds perfect with the gain at noon, if it was preset to max gain (as fuzzy/gainy as possible as you say) then it would turn a great pedal into a crap one. There were some great low gain tones in the Duality, shame that we couldn't explore them via a gain knob - lots of folk might not think to tweak the volume knob on their bass, or it would not be practical to do so if they need to kick the effect on and off mid song. mrdreadful Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Nine of Swords Altar. It goes from slight grit to full on buzzsaw so is pretty versatile. I would assume it works well with active basses as I use an EQ pedal before it to boost the signal from low output basses and that works fine. It's £50, which considering it's hand made is bloody good. I definitely get enough mids (but then I boost mids at the amp anyway), and it's about the same size as EHX 'micro' pedals. paul_5 Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Coloursound Bass Fuzz. I've been through over a dozen different fuzz pedals (some boutique, some less so) and this one is the one that I keep coming back to. Quote

1976fenderhead Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I quite like the Colorsound stuff, I had the sfx clone and it was good but it didn't cut through very well, it didn;t have the Mid switch so maybe it's better now. Would be very curious to try that Rhinosaur Quote
GazWills Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 me too - borrowed a guitar vintage coloursound a while back and like the 'flavour' of it... I think Juan A recently picked up the Rhinosaur so maybe pedalsandeffects review soon?? Quote
IBWT Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I've recently bought a Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B. It's basically a Swollen Pickle with less controls, voiced for bass and with a blend control, and that control makes a world of a difference from any other Muff-type pedal. Also mine has a mid scoop switch (custom option). 100% recommended. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Njv_4Hhd3v4 Quote

I had to put a small transistor boost after it, as it was a little bit lacking in volume, but it's my weapon of choice. OA47 (germanium, almost no voltage drop - 0.45v) as clipping diodes make a big difference. Edited June 13, 2015 by paul_5 Quote

I used to wave at Brightlingsea folk. Mersea boy. I'm thinking that suitably set up the Knightfall with do subtle warmth/a hint of grit but that the Tarkin won't?? LewisK1975 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I'm not a Fuzz fan really, but I couldn't help notice how the EBS Fuzzmo pedal has been dramatically reduced in price in a few places... https://www.amazon.co.uk/EBS-FuzzMo-High-Distortion-Pedal/dp/B00GMY1RR8 Quote
