That's what I'd expect if I ordered tort.

Best tort I've seen apart from Spitfire's is the stuff that WD Music sells. It ain't cheap but it's proper swirled plastic that you can see the pattern through the thickness of the guard like a 3D effect rather than a print which is what you get on cheaper examples.

I think that's not bad tort at all Geek99.

It's not a million miles from the old tort on my 1970 P bass, and well within the realms of both the Fender tort plate I sold here last week, and the one on my Sandberg California bass.

Looks very decent indeed.

Sorry - but it looks cheap to me :o & judging by the close up around the jack socket it doesn't look very well cut either, I'd suggest you didn't pay a lot for it

That's a fair point about the cutouts looking a bit scruffy - I was more thinking about the colour to be honest, which looks ok to me.

This is what I wanted thanks - comments on colour from owners of the real thing, 70s red tort was what I wanted
It's not quite the dark wine red colour I wanted but it's not bad colour wise. Cutout issues were easily solved
I can't justify paying spitfire7s prices and I don't have time to make a decent job out of a blank wd tort sheet. Bass doc did point me towards some ultra red stuff they do (when he did my build) but I can't spare the time to make one.

This is my favourite tort, my AVRI '62 P-bass

I love the yellow flecks in the swirl & the depth of the patterns, my photography is shyte though

The problem with the repro stuff - apart from the colours - is that it's too sharp and focussed. It's just not organic.

Here's some old pics of mine, all '71-ish. The colour balance is all off, but you'll get a feel for the pattern:

The rosewood precision has what I wanted but you've also made me realise that there is significant variation in red

Here's a Spitfire for comparison - lovely 3D and slightly more red and cream-yellow than appears here (iPhone). About as good as it gets from contemporary suppliers (but very expensive - mine came ready-fitted)
