Annoying Twit Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 I'm familiar with a lot of bass guitar sounds, but I don't really know what the term 'growl' actually means. I'm told my SR760 has loads of it, but don't really know what aspect of the sound that refers to. Quote
Happy Jack Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 'Growl' means a slightly less metallic 'Clank'. Quote
visog Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 To me, growl is a distinct lower-mid flare in the tone which colours it with a pleasant burnished sound. If 'Clank' is a Rick, I'd say 'Growl' is a Warwick... Quote
JTUK Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 Yep, agree, useless term, Probably means 101 thing to 101 people. Quote
Annoying Twit Posted June 19, 2015 Author Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) Thanks. But when I go to youtube to listen for this less metallic 'clank', I can't hear it. E.g. That sounds like a perfectly normal jazz bass sound to me. In this one, he's talking about growl and clank, but again it sounds like a normal bass sound to me. Is the growl the slight rattle he's getting? In this video he doesn't start playing until about 4:30 or so. he spends the rest of the time 'explaining' in what to me didn't seem a hugely effective manner. Now I'm on this video, and there's definitely something going on there. Very twangy. Dad3353 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 It's what it sounds like just before 'grind', but after 'clean'. Much less than 'dirt', in any case. No need to thank me. Quote
lowhand_mike Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 i always though the growl monster was something completely different like JTUK said it can mean diferent things to different people, for me its a slight osilation character to a note just after the main attack, present in the sustain so the notes dont sound just smooth. It is a combination of things i think and certain basses have more of it than others like warwick $$, stingrays have it but they are slightly more fizzy/zingy. In the video he does get a bit of 'growl' but its very subtle. Specters have quite a bit of growl. Quote

Roger2611 Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 It's funny how we refer to terms without actually knowing what the term really means....that Precision bass growl....mine doesn't and I would be scared if I picked it up and it actually growled at me...I would put it down and back away slowly! Surely growling is more, 'Aroogah! Aroogah!' Edited June 19, 2015 by discreet Quote
discreet Posted June 19, 2015 Posted June 19, 2015 (edited) If P Basses can growl, then it can't be burping. It could be grunting. Maybe it's more like blowing chunks. Or possibly some kind of groaning... I think it may be that involuntary noise I make when I get up out of an armchair... 'ahhhh-ohhhh'... Or the current mrs discreet's night-noises, a kind of weird, loud moo-ing, interspersed with a hideous breathing sound like the death-rattle of a homeless. It's difficult to describe sounds in words, isn't it? Edited June 19, 2015 by discreet Quote
