Well folks ..
Im looking to do a bit of upgrading to one of my Basses and im looking at putting in a J Retro , i also want to change the PuPs but im not sure weather to use active or passive !!! the retro comes with its own power supply so im thinking that the pups should be passive ..... or do i get active and they are run from the battery in the J Retro ... can anyone clarify this.........or does it even matter ..Thanks .

The only active pickups I've heard of are EMG's and I don't know what advantage that brings, so passive pickups for me.

This also gives you the option of switching between active and passive modes.

I have only used passive pups with J and U-Retros. These pre amps are so powerful on their own that I'm not sure of any advantage with active pups.

Active pickups - Like chris b - I've never seen any for sale apart from EMG's. According to the EMG website: http://www.emgpickups.com/bass/extended-series/4-string/35dc.html#info They already have a preamp in the active pickup designs - not sure how well they would work with the J-retro. I'd imagine they could be made to work well.

If you ever change your mind passive pups would be easier to move on, I would have thought.

Buying passive also gives you more choice.

Looking forward to hearing some good sound clips... :)
