tom1946
Well today I received my much modified Precision Lyte back. It's been to Jon Shuker's for a holiday and to have the board refaced with a maple one. This is now quite unique as I don't think they were ever made with a maple board. I did this because I needed a light bass as some of you know and apart from the rosewood board it was just right for me. I also had an SD-SPB-1 pickup fitted while I was at it. The end result for me is fantastic, much easier to see the dots now and it looks amazing! I know some people will hate what I've had done and possibly think it's ruined now but I don't care, I have what I want. anyway a few pics of Jon's handiwork: cheers. HowieBass
That colour body really shines with the maple board - inspired choice!
M@23
Fantastic! Nicest example of one of these I've seen.
project_c
Looks amazing! I prefer a maple neck too. Would love to hear some sound clips of this.
discreet
Can't beat a maple board (with the possible exception of a one-piece maple neck) and the SPB-1 is an excellent choice.
PlungerModerno
Looks fantastic. If the fingerboard edges is rounded nicely I'd imagine it's as good, if not better than new!
tom1946
Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I have to admit that I opened the case and just looked at it for a few minutes. Jon did roll the edges and it sports a bone nut too. It looked very dull with the rosewood but it looks amazing with maple. Such an easy neck to get around too. Painy
The contrast of the bright maple between the darker body and matched headstock just looks stunning. I think these are actually really good, underrated basses but their looks always seem a bit nondescript to me. This looks to me now though like something that came out of the custom shop. 1st class job there!
Old Horse Murphy
Very nice Tom. Great vision. It looks gorgeous with the maple board.
Funky Dunky
I'll tell you what, that is a bloody beautiful instrument. Congrats Tom, she is most droolworthy. Edited June 28, 2015 by Funky Dunky
tom1946
Thanks, the credit goes to Jon Shuker, he is a genius and in future if I see a bass I really like with a rosewood board I can now buy it and have it converted!
Dood
Wow!!! Yes! Love it! Now I'm inspired to have a maple board put on my Fender! Jon is an incredible luthier, one of the very best and his work is always top notch. I agree, the maple board really sets off nicely against the body finish! Yummy! Simon.
That looks t'riffic! Well done. Any particular reason why you wanted to change out the P-pup? Much as I love my P-Lyte, I've always felt the pick-ups let it down ever so slightly.
yorks5stringer
Here's something completely similar from the same stable! (Wish I'd done the headstock the same colour as the body)
ead
Very nice Tom, loving the look of it and hopefully will tick all the boxes for you.
Hi Simon, I don't use the j pickup so there was no point changing it. The P pickup as you say, is lacking, it just felt very thin to me and the SPB-1 provides some real kickass thump. I now have the best of all worlds, light as anything, some real poke and tone and killer looks. /sorted! Only trouble is I'd like a spare one, you know, just in case........
