P bass earth hum when volume if off

Touch anything metal on the bass and it goes away. Turn the vol up and it goes away.
What am i missing?

I'd be tempted to replace the volume pot - when you turn it 'off' it sounds like you're losing a connection to ground.

Ditto the above point. If you have a CTS pot it can be stripped and cleaned which would probably resolve your problem, just be very careful not to damage the wiper inside the pot but it's not that easily done. Failing that stick a pot of equal value in there, easy job with a soldering iron. Let us know!
