LukeFRC
well not on a fretless, on a neck that i am going to make fretless. well i want something hard to coat it with. now a decent floor varnish should be the cheapest/easiest and hardest polyester coating i can think of. something like this any recommendations? Paul Cooke
well it would be interesting to see how you get on using that ronseal... I have used two part West System before now and it came out well. http://www.westsystem.com/ Costs a lot more than the ronseal and you have a lot left over... ah, I've just spotted the "small batch" range which would be better suited... I usually use whatever I've got around as I also do repairs to dinghies and cruisers when you do your first coat of anything, make sure the surface is thoroughly degreased and has no sanding dust left on it, then just before applying the coat, use a hair dryer to warm up the fingerboard so that as it cools, it draws the coat into the pores as the air shrinks (yes, I know the wood shrinks as well, but the air shrinks more). 2x18
I coated the Maple fretboard on my Mustang that I defretted with Industrial Superglue brushed on fairly heavily, then after drying for a few days I flatted it with wet and dry and finally polished with T-Cut. Worked well for Me! Will.
LukeFRC
see my guess is that a floor varnish will have the nessesery hardness and will be earier to source and apply. and cheaper!
Alien
I'd use Rustins Plastic Coating. It's a 2-pack acid catalysed lacquer, tough as old boots, pretty much everything-proof. Andy
LukeFRC
lol i went and got some of the ronseal floor stuff. we shall see how it turns out!
DanOwens
I'm after doing a similar project. I'm assuming that once something like the epoxy or the Rustins has been applied, a radius block and some sandpaper is the way you get it playable? Or do you do it by hand/eye? dub
I reckon you'd be better off using that varnish on the floor, you'll get a better tone without it and it will wear through on the neck anyway.
