Jenny_Innie
I love everything about this. Cool girlie singer/songwriter/guitarist and great bass sound. He gads about with a funny Gibson bass that sounds good too sometimes. I Shazam'd the end credits to the Grand Prix on Sunday and discovered this artist. Me likey. I say have less Miley and more of this. (why does the youtube fing not work?) Lw.
I've been enjoying the album; definitely some good tunes on there. I'm not sure how much longevity there is in the current sound but it's certainly fun summer listening.
Roland Rock
Sounds good - bit of a Velvet Underground feel
RhysP
I'm covering a Courtney Barnett song on Friday apparently (me on guitar & a female singer).... Haven't even listened to it yet.
gjones
My niece toured the UK with Courtney last year. They have the same manager. Courtney's great.
Mr H
Courtney Barnett is great - Radio 6 Music has been playing her for a while now, so we old sods are ahead of the curve for once.
Jenny_Innie
She looks cool. She sounds cool. What's not to like? Does anyone else thinks she looks a bit like Russell Crowe? Haha. That's cool too. Looking at her online stuff, she often plays a Tele too ..... which as you know, is a winning situation.
alyctes
Not sure about the voice, TBH.
KevB
Sounds a bit approximate to me, and people go on about Florence...
landwomble
I think she's great. My daughters (8 and 11) love her too. I'm using "Pedestrian at Best" to get my youngest playing the short scale P bass :-)
Beer of the Bass
Sounds a bit approximate to me, and people go on about Florence...
It's quite a different thing she's going for though. Since Barnett has a semi-spoken vocal style, lyrics with some deadpan wit about them and an intentionally homespun, relaxed style I don't mind the unpolished delivery. She's not attempting some bombastic feat of "look-at-me" vocal gymnastics like Florence. All of this is of course IMO. I've been enjoying the songs they play on 6 music. KevB
Yep, sounds like Lou Reed. Never that keen on his 'singing' either. Each to their own and all the usual stuff. Edited July 7, 2015 by KevB
landwomble
It's the glorious delivery of the lyrics that gets me. Doesn't give a sh*t and sound great. I think she's amazing
super al
I caught 'pedestrian at best' today on 6 music, didn't catch the name so thanks Jennie :-) Made me stop and listen which happens quite a lot on LL's show in the morning, she picks some cracking toons! Jenny_Innie
i think the guitar tone she gets from her Tele and her Jaguar is total amazeballs. I'm sure she's not technically the best at anything, but she's fresh and entertains me.
landwomble
That's exactly it. It's gloriously slack. They are completely unpretentious and she is a beautifully honest lyricist. It kind of makes me think of John Cooper Clarke.
cheddatom
Ace! I'd not heard of her, so thanks

She is also playing a hollow body in the WFPK Radio Louisville video.
