I also think you need the thing in the first pic. It works with a strap. It means you can get all Tony Levin and wander around with it on your shoulder while throwing shapes on stage.

Hi. I've got an NS WAV 4 string with a really solid floor stand. (Pics below)

Would the spike fitting go on to this bass instead and then make it a "free standing" upright bass that you can move about the stage with?

What are the pair of "arms" that are sticking out at the side of the fitting for?

You are correct, the spike thing would be instead of the solid stand and the instrument is free to move around then. The arm things allow you to "balance" the bass against your body as you would with a DB.
