I'm down to a roll of dimes
I'm stalking the slot that's hot
I keep hearing bells all around me
Jingling in the lucky jackpots
They keep you tantalized
They keep you reaching for your wallet
Here in fools' paradise

I talked to a cat from Des Moines
He said he ran a cleaning plant
That cat was clanking with coin
Well he must have had a genie in a lamp
'cause every time I dropped a dime I blew it
He kept ringing bells
Nothing to it!

He got three oranges
Three lemons
Three cherries
Three plums
I'm losing my taste for fruit
Watching the dry cleaner do it
Like Midas in a polyester suit
It's all luck!
It's just luck!
You get a little lucky and you make a little money!

I followed him down the strip
He picked out a booth at Circus Circus
where the cowgirls fill the room
With their big balloons
The cleaner was pitching with purpose!
He had Dinos and Pooh Bears
And lions pink and blue there
He couldn't lose there!

Des Moines was stacking the chips
Raking off the tables
Ringing the bandit's bells
This is a story that's a drag to tell
(In some ways)
Since I lost every dime
I laid on the line
But the cleaner from Des Moines
Could put a coin
In the door of a John
And get twenty for one
It's just luck!

I remember being absolutely mesmerised by this when I first saw it on Top of the Pops....many,many moons ago.

Iron Maiden - The Number of The Beast.

This did it for me. I was about 10 years old and when I saw it, my mind was made up. Grow hair, get a guitar and be like Steve Harris. I did grow my hair, I did get a bass. I have never been like Steve Harris.

Bruce's scream at the start of the song, those guitar solos and the imagery still work for me.....scared my parents at the time as Iron Maiden posters started appearing in my bedroom. Happy days.

... amongst many others. Not just first listen, either; the magic still operates, all these decades later.

The summer had inhaled and held its breath too long
The winter looked the same, as if it never had gone
And through an open window where no curtain hung
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

One begins to read between the pages of a look
The shape of sleepy music, and suddenly you're hooked
Through the rain upon the trees, that kisses on the run
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

You can't stay and live my way
Scatter my love like leaves in the wind
You always say you want to go away
But I know what it always has been, it always has been

A transparent dream beneath an occasional sigh
Most of the time I just let it go by
Now I wish it hadn't begun
I saw you, yes I saw you, comin' back to me

Strolling the hills overlooking the shore
I realize I've been here before
The shadow in the mist could have been anyone
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

Small things like reasons are put in a jar
Whatever happened to wishes wished on a star?
Was it just something that I made up for fun?
I saw you, I saw you, comin' back to me

Mr Discreet, as always a chap of impeccible taste, mainly for avoiding the temptation of posting 'Constipation Blues'!

I can still remember how I felt the first time I heard The Great Society's (later Jefferson Airplane's) White Rabbit, and it still goes down a storm when my current band plays it. Immodestly, I therefore offer The Wirebirds and the amazing Jenny Haan's version: https://thewirebirds...ck/white-rabbit

Thank you, the studio version is rather tame compared to playing it live, at one recent gig the audience insisted on hearing it 4 times!

I'll have to see if my lot would have a go at it. Our PA is quite minimalist, though; our singster sings 'dry', so I don't know how we'd be able to create, live, those excellent delays without having an engi on the desk.
We're, apparently, roughly the same generation, it would seem, with some similar influences. This could explain my keen interest in your Casady bass, still, surprisingly, available in the 'Basses For Sale' section. I doubt that such a fine instrument would still be there in October, it's bound to find acquirer before then, but I can hope, can't I..? B)

:) Unfortunately in this case our hopes are not exactly compatable! Just listening through some recent gig recordings for a good version of 'Rabbit', last gig had a couple stood by the recorder for that one song! If you enjoyed hearing Jen sing Rabbit then you might also like our 'Move Over' https://thewirebirdswithjennyhaan.bandcamp.com/track/move-over We usually hold this one back for the final encore as Jen can barely talk or stand after it, she puts everything into it.

Not a song, but a moment in a song. And more hair on back of neck than asphyxiation...but in Firth of Fifth by Genesis there is a moment about a third of the way through when Steve Hackett comes in with the main guitar solo...just wonderful (ymmv, imho and other caveats apply).

Reading this thread made me seek this out again. Still makes my heart race and the hairs on the back of the neck stand up, especially the section starting 08.50 and the two guitar solos (Steve Hillage) at 12.10 and 13.08. Loud, through headphones, for best results :)

Ravel's Bolero. Age 10 in a school music lesson. The teacher played a film of the piece being performed as a means of introducing us to the various instruments of the orchestra. I can still picture the room I was in whilst we were watching the film. I knew then I wanted to be a musician.

The lovely thing was that I ran home to tell Mum what I had seen/heard and she rifled around in her (tiny) record collection and found a copy of Bolero. I was elated!!

This also takes my breath away, especially as the first time I heard it was being played live, and I was in a somewhat altered state of mind. Some wonderful bass playing in here too: https://www.youtube....h?v=zWak6bfPS_U

My second wife couldn't bear to be in the house when I listened to it, she said it was the music of the madhouse, it really disturbed her to hear it.

One track leads to another, for a long time I had this one track on permanent play in my car. Certainly held my attention for a very long time, and still does it for me.
More rather good bass playing, I reckon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiIJhzkVwio
