TRBboy
Hey folks! I was just wondering the other day whether anyone uses/has used PA gear for their bass amplification? I was considering the fact that a lot of the high end bass amps these days are very Hi-Fi, and cabs are usually full-range, so I wondered if PA gear would do the job? Maybe a powered 12" PA speaker, with a powered 12" sub underneath, and just use an outboard preamp/multi-fx to tailor your sound a bit...... I'd just be interested to know if anyone had any thoughts about it! Saw this and thought it could work well for bass, especially with a sub under it: (alright, I know it's Behringer but......) http://www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Lighting/Behringer-Ultratone-KXD12-PA-System-Keyboard-Amplifier/XPP
Bassman Steve
I seem to recall a thread where the experts said that the plastic used for hese cabs didn't make for good bass cabs. Certainly Adam Clayton used 4 pa cabs for his bass quite early on.
crez5150
Depends on the brand/quality.... I've used a 3way Dynacord box several times in the past as a bass cab with great effect. Most of the time these days I just run a DI into the pa and don't bother taking backline.... let the PA and monitors do all the work
Guest bassman7755
There is certainly some amount of convergence of design going on. E.g. .. http://barefacedbass.com/product-range/FR800.htm
JTUK
Don't think you want sub for bass.... and I'm not sure you'll like such a clinical signla for the bass itself. I'd say no..with a capital N, but it might depend on the cab. Definitely not composite though so where does that leave you..?? you'll be paying £8-900 for a decent wooden bass cab..altho you might get active for that. Then you'll need a decent pre and you've spent a lot of money for marginal, if any, gains, IMO. I did run a 4550 K140 with tops once and thought the sound quite flattering at the time... but you learn from those type of mistakes. super al
I was left with an old Peavey PA from my last band. Started using one of the speakers as a cab with my TC Electronic bh250. I wouldn't say it was great but it's loud enough for band practice (15 inch speaker,150 watts). The bh250 sounds a lot better through the 2x10 (admittedly 400 watts) but I like the look of this little red amp atop a scruffy, beat up old PA cab.
