Weird E string problem.

As per the title, the E string on my SX jazz is doing something very odd.

It makes almost a vibrato sound...an unwanted oscillation. It gets more obvious higher up the neck and by the time you get to the 15th fret it's pretty crazy sounding. You can hear it on the open string but not as much.

I've changed strings and the new set is doing the same. I was convinced it was a duff E string but now I doubt that's the cause.

Everything looks ok at the bridge and and at the nut and tuner.

Turning either of the volume knobs subtly changes the rate of the oscillation but the sound is always there with both pickups on or with either just the neck or bridge.

Any ideas?

Fixed it!

Lowered the pickups! don't know why I didn't think of that earlier!

We certainly do! I've been playing for 30 years and I've never had that particular problem before.
