Same reason they look wonky coming out of the nut, I guess; hard to fit the ends (tuners, balls) in the same space as the strings themselves.

Looks like a semi to me.

I expect the 80/20 rule comes into play here: spend 80% of your time tuning it, and the other 20% playing out of tune
