lobematt Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I've got a big band gig coming up in a few weeks and I'm working through some of the charts. Quite a few have the marking 'Soli.' above certain measures... What does it mean?? Thanks! Quote
chris_b Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 soli (ˈsəʊlɪ) adj, adv 1. (Classical Music) music (of a piece or passage) to be performed by or with soloists. Compare tutti [plural of solo] It's all out there. . . . . . Quote
Bilbo Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 It's the bit where everyone stops and you keep going (generally thinking 'oh, fcuk!! Is this right? Shoudl I have shut the fcuk up by now or what'? 'Why is everyone staring at me'? It is usually a bass cliche but best check before you play it . Quote
Dad3353 Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Often, the whole band will play the main theme (the 'head'..?), maybe a couple of times through, then the soloists will take a solo in turn each (maybe a turn for the bassist, too..!), then back to the theme and out. The basic chart structure remains valuable during these bars, normally. 'Soli' is simply the plural form of 'Solo'. Quote
