Nicko Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I think the thread title should say it all. I'll start with Lenny Kravitz Are you Gonna Go My Way. Its dull, dull, dull, yawn until you get to the bass under the guitar solo is just free form jazz crap, and then there's that tricky bass and drum fill after the solo that a b***ard to get the timing right. And then it ends. And I don't even like the song much. I just left this out of our proposed set list for the weekend - but I expect the [s]walking ego[/s] guitarist will want it back in. Quote
TimR Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 It's guaranteed to empty the dance floor. We dropped it after 5 times trying to shoehorn it into a set and force people to listen to it. Quote
ras52 Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 So the answer to Lenny's question would seem to be "No." Quote
mrtcat Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Its one of those songs that is usually only in the set list for a guitarists benefit. That's a guitarist who is stuck in the past and hasn't noticed it's well past it's prime as a song. I hate playing stuff like that unless the drummer is tight so you can really nail the fill and have some fun in the solo. It's far from Lenny Kravitz's best work. Always On The Run or Fields Of Joy are way better to play but none are floorfillers. Quote
Oopsdabassist Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Agree we did it for a while, the drum fill was the best part about it as me 'n our drummer hang tight lol, guaranteed party killer though so its long gone! Quote
The Badderer Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I would far rather play Are you gonna go my way than Teenage Kicks. At least there's something interesting in it. Teenage Kicks is one of the worst songs I've ever had to play. Utter crap. (Apologies to any fans of the song/band, I just think it's terrible and simplistic and had to play it for a couple of years in a band where it was one of the only songs one of the people in it could sing, so we had to keep it in the set whilst he was in the band). Quote
Muzz Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 That's odd: we have it in our set, and it gets folk up for the second set just fine... Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 We've never had a problem with Are You Gonna Go My Way. Always seems to go down well. Quote
squire5 Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 (edited) Same here.Teenage Kicks always gets a crowd going.We're a bit biased tho,being from Norn Iron. Edited July 29, 2015 by squire5 Quote
barkin Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 (edited) We do it, even though the guitar man doesn't much like it, 'cause it slways goes down so well. Edit: LK - AYGGMY, that is Edited July 29, 2015 by barkin Quote
Graham Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Hysteria - it's such a "look at me I'm a bass player" song and usually empties the dancefloor. There are other songs by Muse I'd much rather do. Quote
gary mac Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I don't enjoy playing it, just sick and tired of it I guess but have to admit, that it is always well received in the pubs around these parts. Quote
DaBassMonsta Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 It always goes down well in our set too. Interesting... Quote
JTUK Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Picking songs for a set list and making it flow is quite an art and skill ...much ignored, IMO. Many bands just pick their favourite songs and try and play them. It just about works down the pub and that is the end of it. Quote
Hobbayne Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I dont mind playing AYGGMW, although I usually bluff my way through the chromatic passing note section under the guitar solo. We actually segue it into Thin Lizzys Rosalie. Quote
blue Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I'm not a Lenny fan. He's nothing more than a poser. Blue Quote
Woodinblack Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 (edited)
I would far rather play Are you gonna go my way than Teenage Kicks.
I would rather play almost anything than Teenage Kicks. The things stopping it being anything are Mary Janes Last Dance and Ever Fallen in love (the last one I always get confused with Teenage Kicks). Which is a shame really as they are all in our setlist. Oh well, at least I kicked Dakota out! -- But yes, the crowd likes it. Edited July 29, 2015 by Woodinblack Quote

Blue
First album was amazing imo , after that its not really done anything for me. Did my time playing "are you gonna ..." just like every other must do cover such as "sex on fire" etc, but thankfully I'm now in a band that avoids these things, I wont knock them though Edited July 30, 2015 by lojo Quote

Paul S Posted July 30, 2015 Posted July 30, 2015 Off on a slight tangent but the first time I heard this I thought - Kravitz kind of revisiting the feel of 'Always On The Run', but no it isn't. http://youtu.be/6UEjz0P68T8 Quote
MarkW Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Our set lists are now compiled with a view to confusing the bass player as little as possible. A few weeks ago we did a gig where we had Valerie (the Amy Winehouse version: fret a D# and play duh-du-duh-du-du) and You Can't Hurry Love (fret a Bb and play du-du-duh, du-du-du-duh) in the same set. You can work out what happened for yourselves... Quote
Grassie Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 We play AYGGMW, and it seems to go down quite well. I don't mind playing that, it bloody Highway to bloody Hell that bores the living $hit out of me. Eff all in the verses, so I have to stand there like a pork pie at a vegan wedding, then plodding quarter notes in the chorus. Hate it with a passion. Complete and utter rubbish. Quote
KevB Posted July 31, 2015 Posted July 31, 2015 Used to play it in a band around 2004 or so for a couple of years. Quite enjoyed learning it, the middle section in particular. Never played it since. Always seemed to go down well, we had a singer who was a good guitarist and a lead guitarist who was even better. They had that dual gtr sound down to a tee. Quote
