So... I've got a project on the go- and been thinking of shell pink finishes... then glitter finishes... and then was showing the wife some of Jens Ritter's masterpieces and had a thought - anyone got/seen any good examples of illustrated basses at all?

I can think of say Flea's modulus with all the stickers... and can find things like the guitar below - but anyone got anything sh*ethot cool to show me? :D Plotting things...

TimAl of this parish does this thing with comics onto guitars

Not a bass, but the PRS designed/painted by the artist Joe Fenton is killer.
He painted it for Mark Tremonti (In the band 'Alter Bridge', but of Creed fame)

Mark tours with this guitar too, so it's not just on a wall somewhere!

Do you know what kind of paint would you use for something like this? My fiance is thinking of doing something like this for me on a "display" bass :)

I couldn't even hazard a guess, my arts and crafts skills are that of an infant child - Sorry!

I raise you my Harley Benton JB something something, which is no longer sunburst, having been repainted with a view to achieving a completely different shade of gold (mission failed, though the result is more than welcome) and decorated on the scratchplate by my crafty GF.

I'd like do something like that to a bass but all mine are special in some way or another and if I had an instrument that I could do that to, it would be surplus to requirements and at risk of being sold. Still...having said that, the Status has been refinished already...hmm.

My freehand illustration style is a bit cartoony but I can do botanical illustration type watercolours and gouache/casein paintings if I avoid people. Syd Meads is a massive influence in my architectural renderings.

I think you could use whatever medium takes your fancy. As long as it works well with the primer and as long as you can protect it properly with a clear finish it'll be fine.

I've seen some work on guitars done with an airbrush, some with pen and ink and some with acrylic paints and a brush.

I'm sure I've seen some heat-stamped/scorched artwork somewhere too?

Anyone remember 'Minky' basses from way back? They had some really cool hand 'etched' finishes that were coloured and stained to look like different types of stone. I thought it was kinda cool, but I've no idea where they are now!

The heat stamped / scorched method is called pyrography .
I did this fake soundhole rosette with a cheap kit as a first try experiment .
( On the upper home defret Stagg . Lower is a Harley Benton Ubass )

The kit is basically a soldering iron with interchangeable tips which have different patterns .

eg.

I submit my Grove Guitars bass (www.groveguitars.com): the top is made from a vintage Moosehead beer crate, the neck is by Status Graphite.
[/quote]
The body of my Peterbuilt was also made by Scott Grove. No beer, mine was made from an old crate of dynamite.:)

There is quite a lot out there for guitars, but this is evidently the sort of vanity project that doesn't appeal to bass players☺

www.paintedbypamelina.com has some great examples, or do a search for airbrush guitar art on Google images.

I was thinking that biffy clyro had a guitar and bass with the same illustration but I couldn't find any pictures.
