Rob Roy Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Hello everybody, my name is Roberto, I'm from Italy and I'm 51 years old. I'm an amateaur bass player now but I've been playing in local bands since I was a teenager, mostly post-punk/alternative and most recently in a experimental-electronica band. I've stumbled into this great forum while trying to track down a fretless bass. I've always been a great admirer of Mick Karn (sadly missed!) since Japan's early years on, but at the time didn't want to sound like I was trying to blatantly copy him (...if you know what I mean...) so I never went for a fretless. I had actually defretted a very cheap Pbass clone, just to give it a go, but results were...not so good. Fast forward and nowadays I'm an happy amateurish weekend player, and feel that the time is right for a proper Fretless Bass, and the search continues that's it really...just wanted to greet the community (please excuse my english, it's not my language) Cheers Roberto P.S. should anyone have a suggestion for a good instrument that could be worth considering, please advise. It'd be much appeciated Quote
Adrenochrome Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Hi Roberto, Welcome! I have an Aria Pro ii Magna fretless (used in my acoustic trio) which has more of a 'rock' sound than many fretless basses. Quote
Rob Roy Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 Thanks for the feedback, I'll have a look at that. Quote

Silvia Bluejay Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Hi Roberto, and welcome to Basschat! I think that once you've tried a good fretless, you'll simply fall in love with it. They are obviously not suitable for all kinds of music or songs, but they are unbeatable in the right place at the right time. I see you're based in Livorno - perhaps you could plan a reasonably quick trip to the Emporio Senese to try a few fretless models? Assuming the Emporio is still there, and they still sell basses? Haven't been there for a long time, but I remember it being a pretty large store with a decent selection at the time. Oh, and be ready to get lots more GAS while you're on this forum! Quote
Rumple Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Welcome to BC Roberto. If money were no object a fretless Wal would be your best bet, otherwise I'd suggest something with an ACG filter based eq. Quote
skelf Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 (edited) This might be of interest if you like the work of Mr Karn. Welcome to the forum. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj7Dphqb9iU Edited August 4, 2015 by skelf Quote
Rob Roy Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 (edited) Thank you BCrs for all your inputs! @bluejay, yeah you're absolutely right!, I'll plan a visit to Emporio Musicale (yes it still exisits) and maybe to another fairly big shop while on the way to beautiful Siena (worth a visit anyway...) @rumple, a Wal fretless would be fantastic, but maybe a little over my budget, I was thinking rather about a second hand Pedulla 4 Buzz. Didn't know about ACG filter based eq. basses, thanks. I'll search the web for this! @skelf, fantastic video! yeah this sort of things...EDIT: just realised that YOU are the builder of ACG basses. OMG! Beautiful pieces of art! have a nice day Edited August 7, 2015 by Rob Roy Quote
