Marky L
Afternoon all OK, so I am suffering from a terribly painful GAS attack, that and I am in awful denial having missed out on picking up a Ric Blackstar a few years back. The urge for one of these is now becoming an obsession. I want! So basically, does anyone know of a Ric 4003SPC Blackstar up for sale? Have you seen one lurking? Know of someone that needs to clear some gear? It looks like I missed one on the evilbay a couple of months back.. (bloody missus wanting to go on hols.. mumble mumble). I would really appreciate if anyone chances across one, online or where ever to let me know. And yes I know, rocking horse poop would be easier to find. Thanks, you’re all really quite lovely (except for smelly at the back). Mark
Adee
You might have to wait a while for for a fish on a bike, selling rocking horse sh*te to offer you a Ric Blackstar ! . . and have deep pockets too ! You'd be better off buying a used Jetglo 4003, a Black scratchplate, add a Hipshot bridge cos' they are fantastic and sending your truss rod cover off to Rickenbacker for an exchange. Then you'd have pretty sexy looking beast for a lot less money and be happy to use and play. . . . now let the Blackstar go . . . . . LET IT GO ! Marky L
The idea of a Jetglo with black bits is a distinct possibility. I've seen black truss rod covers on the bay, it would just be getting the other stuff. I just love the ebony board on the Blackstar too, maye a can or car spray paint... Never had a Ric before y'see and I thought if I'm gunna do it, then do it right. It's the deep pockets that's the worry! Mine are usually so shallow, money never stays in them! And the US $ getting stronger too, damn it all. M

Deep Thought
That looks really nice-better than the Blackstar, IMHO. I have a hankering for an all-black Ricky as well-one of these days, maybe.

I prefer the black and chrome too. The Gordon Smith 'Rickenblacker' has arrived that I bought off Ebay. Changing the crappy bridge to a Hipshot Supertone then I'll get some pics up. Bassassin
Hang around on the RickResource board - it's the epicentre for all things Rick, very friendly & knowledgeable lot over there, and if Rickenbackers are scarce, it's because they've got 'em all! If there's a Blackstar going anywhere - it'll be flagged up there first. I'd suggest making it known you're looking for one - the guys on there buy & sell & swap their (huge) collections all the time, so you might get a chance. Proper Blackstars are rare as pope's condoms so you might have a bit of a wait, though... Jon.

bass_ferret
There was somebody on Jools a couple of months back playing a 4004 that had been painted up to look like a Redneck. Did the Blackstar have an ebony board or a regular board painted black?

String spacing seems to be a bit of an issue for ricks. You'd have thought they might have sorted it out over the last 45 years.

According to here - http://www.rickbeat.com/modelslibrary/4003...pcblackstar.htm It's an ebony black, maple fingerboard. And further data suggests a painted maple board. The Redneck and Tuxedo versions were made in seriously short numbers.
Adee
Heres my Rick, I'd love a black TRC but I'm not forking out £50 for one ! Well worth putting a Hipshot bridge on though. Edited September 9, 2008 by Adee
Marky L
Hey Adee, that is very sweet looking and it's a bass like that which is tempting me to go for a "normal" Ric.. so Knowing not a lot about Rics, can I ask for a bit of advice on the 4001 and 4003 basses. What is the major difference between them? Is the 4003 a better beast for the money? I have heard horror stories of the 4001 neck doing a pretty good banana impersonation as the years go on, but did they they put twin truss rods into the 4001? Do they sound comparable? Any info to help me would be cool. I think if I can get a reasonably priced used bass that I can modify to a stealth style, then whoopie!!! I have snooped on evilbay and seen some interesting 4001s. Thanks Mark
