JapanAxe Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 The pics below are of a '69 Precision currently offered for sale on Bass Direct. It is described as 'dark green' and there is no suggestion of a refin. I don't recall seeing a similar colour before - can anyone identify it? It looks black or dark blue to me! Please note I am not casting any aspersions on the provenance of this bass, I am just curious. In fact so curious, I might even feel a trip to Warwick coming on! Quote
ikay Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 There's a vintage colour chart for the 1960s at this link (about 2/3 down the page) - http://www.guitarhq.com/fenderc.html It looks like the attached pic. According to this the only dark green custom finish available in '69 would have been Teal Green metallic. Old nitro finishes tend to go dark with age so it might be this. Although I agree in your pics it looks dark blue! Quote
Mykesbass Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Love the fact they show which car paints they originally were, but that also shows that it is very unlikely to be the very dark green, as even an old nitro finish probably wouldn't change this much http://car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=106264 Quote
EssentialTension Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Sherwood Green was the darkest green among the Fender custom colours ... Quote
EssentialTension Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 On my computer the OP's bass doesn't look green at all. Quote
EssentialTension Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Car version of Sherwood Green ... Quote

EssentialTension Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Sherwood Green Metallic at the top right corner ... Quote
EssentialTension Posted August 15, 2015 Posted August 15, 2015 Looking at the pics and the video at the Bass Direct site, there does appear to me a very dark but olivish green to the finish. I've no idea what custom colour that would be unless it's the yellowing of the clear coat over black or something similar. Quote
JapanAxe Posted August 15, 2015 Author Posted August 15, 2015 I can forgive the slapping because it's the chorus from Peg by Steely Dan, but who's the dancing fool? http://youtu.be/zxWth2F3dC4 Quote
Sibob Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 If that's an original Sherwood Green finish then that is rare as a rare thing. Although I thought that Sherwood Green tended to age to more of a blue colour, could be wrong though! Si Quote
JapanAxe Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 Hmmm. I know Sherwood green is rare, but I don't like it! I'll just have to see the thing 'in the flesh'. Quote
BigRedX Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 With that amount of "mojo" does it really matter what colour the bass is? ;-) Plus it looks dark blue on both my computers. Quote
Musicman20 Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Sherwood Green is gorgeous. That's my input. I had a Fender Jaguar 'Marrguar' which wasnt finished well at all, but the colour was great. Quote
EssentialTension Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 Under the pickguard looks dark grey more than dark green. Quote
discreet Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 (edited) I know that LPB can age to a very dark green, so 'dark green' could conceivably age to almost black or a very dark blue/grey. There's no trace of green on my monitor, but that means nothing. What it actually is, or was, is irrelevant really. Just consider it black. Edited August 16, 2015 by discreet Quote

The OP will have to go and look at it in meatspace. And I bet his credit card takes a battering, too. Edited August 16, 2015 by discreet Quote
JapanAxe Posted August 16, 2015 Author Posted August 16, 2015 In the end it comes down to one thing: Will it say 'take me, I'm yours'? There is another similar P in my sights, but I'd rather not draw attention to it - I have a bass to sell and a few more beer tokens to save up before I can afford it. Yes I could hit the credit card, but I hate playing financial catch-up afterwards, much nicer to feel you have a cash stash to spend! Quote
KK Jale Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 I can't comment on the green/black thing, but is a black scratchplate likely to be original on ANY '69 Precision? On a natural finish, maybe? Not casting aspersions, just interested to find out. Quote

EssentialTension Posted August 16, 2015 Posted August 16, 2015 I don't know when black pickguards first became available but I belive 1960s custom colours commonly had white pickguards. Quote
