Are you choosing songs that are 'basic plodders' that every other band is doing or are you throwing in stuff that is a bit more technically challenging and complex? And if so are those more challenging pieces showcasing the guitarist or others? Could be contributory factors. Either way we all know don't we that punters just don't have a clue what bassists do and only other bass geeks will come up after a gig and compliment you on your playing anyways .
