Mykesbass Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 OK, confession time, I've never heard any RATM, but as a fan of more recent Bruce Springsteen albums, love what Morello does as a guest, especially his vocals on Tom Joad. So I really ought to listen to some more of his work, and know he has a few fans on here, so what should I listen to first? Thanks. Quote
ezbass Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I'm not particularly knowledgable about RATM, but I can recommend Audioslave as another source of Tom Morello's work. http://youtu.be/7QU1nvuxaMA Quote
TimR Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 RATM have a greatest hits album The Platinum Collection. As good as any. Quote
dannybuoy Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Start with the first self-titled RATM album! He also has some solo stuff out as The Nightwatchman. Quote
Old_Ben Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Audioslave tend to be played through my radio more than the rage stuff these days Quote
HazBeen Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Simple, start with Rage, then Audioslave, then NightwatchMan, then Axis of Justice, finally Street Sweeper Social Club is another totally different side to Morello. You then have listened to all facets. Quote
mike257 Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 (edited) The first RATM album has aged pretty well in my opinion. It was a big influence on me bass-wise when I first started playing too, there's some massive grooves and great riffs on there. Their last release, Renegades, is full of goodies too. It's covers of artists that influenced the band, but reinterpreted in their own style. There's everything from classic hip hop tunes to Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, MC5 and Minor Threat, and a mighty, riff-laden version of Tom Joad for good measure. rOB Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015
Rage, then Audioslave, then NightwatchMan, then Axis of Justice, finally Street Sweeper Social Club .... all facets. uncle psychosis Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 The first Rage Against The Machine album (the self-titled one) is the best starting point. Every track is a killer. Quote

Mykesbass Posted August 18, 2015 Author Posted August 18, 2015
He also has some solo stuff out as The Nightwatchman.
Now that's what I'm looking for, thanks. Have had a quick skim through all the other work, and, to be honest, whilst I can hear it is great stuff it doesn't really float my boat, whereas the Nightwatchman material is coming from the same place as the work with Springsteen. Interestingly, I thought Renegades would be close, but was possibly what I liked least! Quote

ped Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Am I right in thinking the most recent Nightwatchman album is the one with a 'full band'? Or have I got that completely wrong.. (Which one's best for metal) Quote
timmo Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Renegades of Funk. Awesome song. Morrello does hardly anything on it, but the bass cuts right through the song. A classic example of less is more i reckon. https://youtu.be/K626gMvu2ds Quote
Lynottfan Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Great guitar player, very creative, one of the most distinctive and original players to arrive after the shred scene imploded on itself. The first RATM album is not only for me Bass 101 (big Tim C fan, best sound on this album, that Ray was mighty!) but the impact of Tom's guitar work was stunning. For Audioslave I am the Highway is a master piece imho. Quote
