wombatboter
Yesterday we were taking a break during the rehearsal and the drummer put on some "old" instrumental stuff which I didn't know but liked a lot. Great bass lines (ànd singing too) by Richard Sinclair in very adventurous music. Little known here in Belgium but I expect that to be different in the UK (at least I hope so) Does this ring a bell around here ? BassTractor
Gotta mention the fantastic Dave Stewart (keys) and Pip Pyle (drums) too. These guys are almost never mentioned, but easily perform on the levels of oft mentioned guys like Keith Emerson and Bill Bruford. Since I'm on now, also very much worth listening to are the bands Egg and National Health, IMS with some of the same musicians. Dave Stewart was also great in the band Bruford. IMHO etc.
FinnDave
Pip Pyle, of course, was in the early incarnations of Gong. So many links with these Canterbury scene bands.

toneknob
As well as the original two albums, also worth checking out are the two archival releases Hatwise Choice and Hattitude, and a more recent release on CD and DVD of Access All Areas, a live recording from the 80s with Richard Sinclair, Pip Pyle, Phil Miller and Sophia Domancich on keys. Spoombung
I absolutely love this band and Richard Sinclair is a terrific bassist. I love this fly-on-the-wall video documentary about the band's reunion in 2006: https://youtu.be/srXT1Q5Bd6A?list=FLanBBuQuTco1aSaAqkwt9Mw
It's a great pic because your eye goes from left to right unconsciously checking who is either comfortable or uncomfortable in the opulent surroundings. Jonathan Coe got it just right in his Rotters Club book: people in bands either looked like this or had cut their hair by 1978.
Mickeyboro
Interviewed RS for the DVD/CD Access release. Lives in Italy and is rather understandably depressed by lack of financial rewards for past work/releases. Hope this pays a few bills. Also interesting band dynamic revealed; he didn't believe he was in same musical league as others, and felt his contributions were simple pop songs. I disagree on both counts ... Bill Bruford described something similar in his autobiography. Edited October 6, 2015 by Spoombung
Spoombung
and a great film of the band live: "You asked me for a chocolate bar Then you went and spoilt it all by eating it what a bore" Edited October 6, 2015 by Spoombung
BassTractor
Must say I was disappointed with the vid. Little discipline if you ask me. I mean: Richard moved his head while singing and Phil... well... Phil sometimes moved most of his upper body, and he even at some point slightly changed the angle of his guitar's neck relative to the floor. I got seasick, and hastily put on a classical church organ vid to recoup.
MoonBassAlpha
I like HATN a lot, but never REALLY liked Miller's guitar tone. The notes are fine though. There's one or two other British guitarists of the jazz/rock scene that were good but had horrible tone, I'm thinking Gary Boyle for one... leftybassman392
Crikey, that takes me back. Not so much for the band (good though they were); more for what I was doing at the time. From my part of the world too... Happy days!
steantval
Blimey that brings back the old memories, went to see Egg live in the 70's. Also remember the prog bands Greenslade and Badger from that era.
timhiggins
Phil Miller was playing not far from me [Safron Walden] a couple of months ago ,with Jack Monk on bass Jack's a fanastic player as is Phil and they are as experimental and searching as ever i would thoroughly recommend catching them as they will be playing around that way again soon ...they also have an album recorded last year and Richard Sinclair sings a track or two and sounds in fine form ..www.relativesrecords.com
BassTractor
For those interested but not in the know, I couldn't resist posting this later song by National Health, also with Dave Stewart, Pip Pyle and Phil Miller. "Tenemos Roads" is a song that I love to death. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj9ZUHju7JE
