One thing I did notice is that the socket on the instrument was often out of shot (as is the case on a lot of YouTube clips), so you couldn't tell whether it was connected or whether the player was miming to a track. And his was the only tone I liked, too, the rest were horrid. I love Federico Malaman, btw. I don't mind a bit of flashy playing, but nothing there floated my boat at all, I found it really boring and uninspiring. And I normally like some of those guys! Quote

chris_b Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I didn't [i]hate[/i] any of those players, and amongst the overplaying and self indulgent twiddle mania I thought there were examples of great playing and fantastic technique. There were some aspects of that technique that we all could benefit from learning, and then adapting to our styles. My playing isn't up to that standard and while I don't get much call to play like that, I know if I could do some of that stuff I'd be a better player. Every time we pick up a bass we should be trying to improve. Maybe I'd start getting some of the gigs these music college wizz kids lock out. Quote

inthedoghouse Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 I got bored after approx 20 seconds and skimmed through some of the others. Those I saw were just as boring imho. I know it's very popular but all this slapping and tapping etc just leads non players to think that slapping is the begining and end of playing bass. I've lost count of the number of times I've chatted to non-players who seemingly think I should be impressed with (insert name of famous slapper) only to look quite surprised when I says I've never heard of them or I'm not interested in that style of playing. It's the same as people who automatically think I'm interested in motorcycle sport (I'm not) just because I ride a bike or that because I'm veggie I should be into folk music and be a pacifist. Arrghhh .... strerotypes! Rant over :-) Quote

But he's the only one I know of... I'd recommend Eric Czar who does some amazing vid but not sure if he plays with anyone of note. visog Quote

Just because he/she/it is a good player who shows no restraint at all and just goes for it. Something I would do if I were less inhibited. Quote

There is also a short concert video of him leading a group through a set of microtonal soul/funk which is worth watching. Quote
