Bought a switch this morning and I have taken the pots out I'll let you know how it works.

Holey scratchplate, Batman!

Many years ago (when I had more time) I did consider building my own bass, with the (passive) pick-ups wired to a tilt-switch (as suggested in a custom guitar book) and then to the jack socket...didn't take me long to realise that perhaps that would be a recipe for disaster.

I use the passive tone control on both my basses a lot, although I tend to use the volume knobs (both are single tone, 2 volume set ups) to vary my tone more. I actually find it easier to get a wide range of tones out of 2 pickup passive basses than with active ones - which is why I am now passive all the way.

Went looking for this, and found:

Never dimmed the tone controls on my passive basses so alwyas had them on full, so I decided to take it out of my Pbass and cover the hole in the scratchplate, one less thing that can go wrong if you ask me :)
i couldnt have a bass that didnt have extensive tone control, as i change quite alot

probably why i hate passives
Why change? You have one sound in your bass that you like... use it and then use it lots more :)
