rmcki
Anyone out there put an East preamp in a thumb bass? I have a UNI-PRE and was considering swapping the out MEC. I was hoping for some advice on the results, pointers and any gotchas before commencing the operation. your thoughts please?
CamdenRob
Not sure about messing with the core tone of a warwick... It's such a unique sound, especially the thumb, if you wanted something that sounded different I'd maybe trade it rather than mod
rmcki
i was thinking that the UHI-PRE would still retain the core sound of the thumb but provide a wider spectrum of variation. Take your point though.
roman_sub
IMO MEC pre-amps are quite harsh-sounding and can probably be improved on! I'm almost certainly going to try a John East BTB module in my Thumb NT6, when I have funds! Unless you're desperate for a active mids control, this may be more cost-effective alternative. cheers, Roman
Cameronj279
I would go for it. As much as I love Warwick basses, the MEC preamps arent great (IMO). The East pre would only improve it. I can't see if really taking away any of the core tone either. Although I could be wrong. only one way to find out!

rmcki
i agree, i find the preamp nasally/aggressive , and there is only 1 way to find out... I can always put the MEC back in if i don’t like it.
Treb
Back in the day when I had my black Streamer Stage 2 the preamp was one of the things I didn't like about it. Sold the bass. John makes very good preamps, it might actually benefit from it. Go for it! Report back though.
BassBunny
I've put East pre-amps in a number of basses and they have made a massive improvement to every one.

rmcki
I actually loved the UNI PRE in the thumb, much warmer tone i thought, but with enough of the Warwick sound left. Though i didn’t get on with the thumb, for some reason i couldn’t get comfortable. This is the second thumb i've tried, an NT and now the BO, both have left me with a sore left hand, so i think it'll be a restore the MEC preamp and move it on. I think i'll look for a 5 string streamer.
