please recommend me 5 string basses around the £300 mark.

2nd hand Cort, Ibanez or Yamaha. Cort GB75 should be in that price bracket and is a lovely bass.

Cort Action V DLX. Mine cost me £250 new. Lovely neck and sounds good too. I don't think it has a real figured top though.

Second hand Squier Deluxe Jazz V Active or a new Squier VM Precision V - these will be slightly wider string spacing than say an Ibanez.

I have an Ibanez 705 (active, slim neck) which I bought s/h in that range, and a Yamaha BB425 (passive, wider neck), which I believe can be bought new for less that that!
