My first 'proper' bass was a Hayman 4040 and it was probably my first real love - but I know I don't get on with them.

Ooh, why not? Just out of interest. :)

That looks terrific! Must not GAS, must not GAS. Resist!

Thanks, but don't worry... they don't come up for sale too often. ;)

A few things, really - always either a bit or a lot too heavy, neck is too wide, 34" scale length - I am enjoying 32" at the moment (ooh matron etc). And I seem to be leaning more and more to single pickup basses.

But they look so damned pretty... :gas:

Certainly unique! :) Historically they're always referred to as heavy basses, but mine isn't... they're made from obeche wood, which is light. So I'm not too sure where the Hayman 'heavy' rep comes from. Unless I have the only light one, which seems unlikely. The necks aren't wide if you're used to a P Bass, but I'm fairly sure J Bass players would struggle a bit. I like a nice thick bit of wood in my hand, personally.

Mine was around 9.5lbs, not overly heavy but too heavy for me. Now the Shergold I had was light as a feather - 7.5lbs

Just weighed mine, it's 9.3lbs - heavier than I thought! My Marathon was 8lbs dead, but felt much lighter.

Have you ever used the ready to iron veneers Andy?
[/quote]

I haven't - no. I would suspect it's also PVA sprayed on. But, if I did, I would still prefer to coat the body also, then there is no possibility you are going to end up with a 'dry' spot.

I have used a veneer with a ready glued on tissue backing - that worked well. Almost identical in technique and in terms of use but seemed quite a lot more resilient to expansion cracking.

Anyone else used ready to use iron on?
