blablas Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 (edited) The building urge is here again. I'm going to endeavor on a double build and a new body design. This will be the mk6 series and will be inspired on the Ovation Deacon body shape. The plan is a lefty shortscale 6 string, basically a bass VI with a more bass player friendly string spacing, this one will be for myself. The second one will be a right-handed guitar for a family member who's building me a tube preamp. I still need to work out the design for them but I know where I'd like to go with it. Right now I'm making an inventory for the needed parts and will soon start ordering them. also bought the first chunks of wood for the fingerboards and bodies. Jatobe and chestnut. scojack Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Looking forward to it Blablas should be nice and light with that chestnut. Ian Quote
Andyjr1515 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Some nice pieces of wood there, blablas I look forward to another great thread and result Quote
Pete1967 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Good choice with the Chestnut. On a whim I bought a couple of boards of Spanish Chestnut and have found it to make excellent body wood. Slightly darker than Ash but sounds like Swamp Ash and is even lighter, plus it's very stable once dried property. A real bonus is that it's sustainable because it's a by product of the Spanish Sweet Chestnut farming industry.... Quote
Cameronj279 Posted September 18, 2015 Posted September 18, 2015 Look forward to it. Always enjoy your builds. Quote
blablas Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 (edited) Finally done something with the design of the body today. It's not fully there yet but gives an indication where I want to go, I've had it for now and I'm first going to let sink in what I've got at the moment. Edited August 1, 2017 by blablas Quote
paulnb57 Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Looks fab, but will it balance on a strap? Looks like it could be neck heavy? Looking forward to the build, looks cool.... Quote
blablas Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 I think it will. It will be a short scale bass and a guitar so not a very long neck that sticks out, there's a lot more wood (weight) at the bridge end than with a traditional style body. And if it doesn't, too bad, most of the time I play sitting down anyway. Quote
blablas Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) Refined the body shape and now it's to my liking. Also designed the headstock. Now it's waiting for the wishes from the customer for further designing of the guitar version. Edited August 1, 2017 by blablas Quote
Andyjr1515 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Very interesting design. I suspect it will be very comfortable to play... Quote
roman_sub Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) maybe a bit of Parker-inspiration in the headstock, interested to see how this turns out from looking at this a bit more, I think the body shape could also work as a "headless" instrument! Edited January 13, 2016 by roman_sub Quote
blablas Posted January 13, 2016 Author Posted January 13, 2016 (edited) I prefer to call it influence. I was sort of thinking of the Parker headstock but tried to do my own thing, afterwards I did a search and luckily mine looks seriously different from the Parker ones.
It sure does but I don't want to go headless due to the very limited choice in hardware and high pricing of what's available. I could make the stuff myself (been there, done that) but that's a serious amount of extra work I'm not looking for. The 'been there, done that' bass. Quote
blablas Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) Did some refining of the headstock design. Placed the tuners closer together and added a lower wing to the headstock, looks more balanced to me now and now it can be put in a guitar hanger, given the body shape it probably won't fit a guitar stand. Bastav Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I like that design better, more balanced as you said. Looking forward to following this build! Quote
blablas Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 (edited) The new headstock attached to the rest. This is it, happy! Bass template is done, still the guitar to go. Edited August 1, 2017 by blablas Quote
Norris Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 That looks better I'm looking forward to this - I do enjoy your builds Quote
HowieBass Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Looking good... as ever! So when this one's finished how many basses will you have? Quote
blablas Posted January 14, 2016 Author Posted January 14, 2016 A lot.... but somehow that's always one or two short. Currently: 42 (plus one on it's way from China at the moment) Quote
blablas Posted January 16, 2016 Author Posted January 16, 2016 Ordered the Pickups for the bass, Delano JSBC 6 HE. Controls will be passive - stacked ala 62 Jazz Bass. Simplicity itself. Quote
