GrammeFriday
For sale, this stunning MTD Kingston AG5: Construction: Alder body with burled maple top, maple neck, matching headstock and purpleheart fingerboard. (Purpleheart as a fingerboard wood is a lot like maple, but, er, purple.) Two octave fretboard, 35” scale and zero fret. Very low action - almost plays itself. Amazing playability all the way up to the 24th fret. OUTSTANDING low B on this one - as good as any I’ve ever played, and way better than many more expensive ‘boutique’ basses that I’ve tried over the years. Electronics: Bartolini custom soapbars and Bartolini 3-band eq. Controls are volume, pickup pan, treble, mid and bass, all boost/cut, with passive bypass push-pull on the volume pot and 250Hz - 800Hz push-pull shift on the mid pot. Extremely versatile. Weight/ergonomics: Very lightweight for a 5er at just over 4kg/9lbs. Balances perfectly on the strap - no neck dive at all. As with all MTDs, this bass has an asymmetric neck profile, which really is a joy to play - it does wonders for your left hand technique by keeping your thumb naturally on the back without you even noticing. Asymmetric necks should be standard on all basses, IMO! Sound: As you would expect from the Andrew Gouche association, this bass is incredible for funk, soul, gospel, R&B and disco, and slaps like a mutha. But it can do pop, indie and rock too, or anything else for that matter - the late Tim ‘Rawbiz’ Williams used the six-string version of this bass when he was the touring bassist for Suicidal Tendencies, so it can cut up as rough as you like if that’s your thing. The neck pickup has a surprisingly traditional, precisiony character, and if you’re into the bridge pup sound, then you are going to have to contain yourself as this is absolutely the nuts - think ’jazz bass on steroids’, but on even bigger steroids. History and condition: I bought this bass new in 2013, and since then it has been my main gigging instrument until very recently. I have looked after it very carefully, however, and it is still in excellent condition. Everything is original and in full and perfect working order. No discernible fret wear. This bass has a satin finish, which I’ve found it to be surprisingly resistant to scratches and knocks. There are a few small bumps here and there, but nothing that has gone through to the wood. The matte finish has started to go shiny with playing wear in a few places, which gives the bass a nice ‘worn-in’ feel, I think. Strings: Currently strung with DR Sunbeams 45-125. YMMV, of course, but I’ve found Sunbeams to be a match made in heaven for this instrument. I will throw in a spare set of these with the purchase. Case/bag: Bass will come with its original and very nicely constructed heavy duty MTD gigbag if you collect in person. If posted, it will be delivered to you in a generic (non-MTD) hard case swathed in plenty of bubble wrap, in order to give it adequate protection in transit. Price: £800 couriered to your door in the UK, or £750 collected from Gramme Towers in South Birmingham. I may also consider posting overseas at additional cost, depending on where you are in the world, and depending on how much of a pain in the arse it will be to send to you. Reason for selling: This is a VERY reluctant sale. I love this bass, and in an ideal world (you know the one, where you are fabulously wealthy and have the west wing of your mansion devoted solely to storing bass gear) it would be a keeper. Unfortunately, in the real world it is a luxury that I cannot afford at the moment - it’s been usurped by a Sandberg VM5 for my old skool covers band, and I really need to free up some cash for my noodly electronics and loops side project (for which I use my MTD 6-string), so the harsh reality is that this lovely bass has to go. “Any trades?” Sorry, no - not interested in any trades at all for this one. This instrument is keenly priced for a quick sale. Bass Direct currently has a B stock one of these for sale at £1450, so this is a proper bargain.
