JapanAxe
Was white (Olympic or otherwise) a standard finish on Precisions during the 70s, and particularly combined with the 'TV logo'? I have googled this a bit without finding a clear answer, so over to you Basschatters...
Lozz196
I had a white 77 Precision - though it had aged to a yellow finish.

discreet
I do indeed have one like that - 1976, it is. There is no finer Fender logo and no finer 70s colour combination, in my humble opinion. http://s734.photobuc...%20April%202015 If you look at the wear on the forearm contour, the Olympic White paint underneath is just as white as it was in 1976. It's a component of the clear poly top coat that degrades over time and give the appearance of this creamy yellow colour. Highly prized by collectors! This particular example was made early in 1976. Later that year, the logo changed to a different and slightly smaller font, and the serial number was moved from the neck plate to the headstock. Anyone getting 70s P Bass GAS, much? Moi? Anyone know the history of the white finish on Precisions - I have seen it on early 60s ones (possibly refins though) and late 70s, but not on late 60s to early 70s - hence my question. Highfox
"Was white (Olympic or otherwise) a standard finish on Precisions during the 70s, and particularly combined with the 'TV logo'?" My understanding was that it was a custom colour in the early 70's, and could also be ordered with an A neck, as mine above.
I think it has something to do with the change from nitro to poly finishes - like I said above, the yellowing on the mid to late 70s Fenders was due to the degradation over time of a component in the final clear poly coat. Early nitro blonde Fenders also go creamy over time, but for a different reason I believe. That's all I've got really, I can't be bothered to do the Google-work! Roland Rock
Yep, I have a 78 P which started life out as Olly White, although it was stripped by the time I came into its life. I've just refinished it In original Olly white again. It'll be quite unusual because it's white and not yellow!
Emanew
I found that about 70s Fender finishes. 505 code for Olympic White I hope it helps here the forum : http://forums.fender...pic.php?t=40098 It is the Great Norman Watt-Roys playing this yellowed Olympic White 70s Precision Bass. BigRedX
The shop that I helped out in during the late 70s had loads of Fenders in that horrible partly see-through white that looked as though the sprayers had knocked off early on Friday without doing the last couple of coats.
I think it must have been a 70's Olympic White P, along with Paul Simonen of the Clash, and DeeDee Ramone ... unless they were bought 2nd hand, and were very late 60's P basses? But DeeDee is rumoured to have had several basses over the years So some of them must have been 70's models Cracking shot of Norman Watt-Roy above Great looking creamy colour on that P bass too Edited September 22, 2015 by Marc S
