RickenFakers

There's a Tokai newly listed (or perhaps related ) on the Bay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BASS-GUITAR-ROCKINBE...f4#ht_500wt_922

BiN price looks high to me though..

& there's a Shine here at a tad under £500:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Shine-Rickenbacker-4...4#ht_2777wt_922

But then again there's a v63 version of the real thing, complete with toaster & horseshoe for not much more thsn twice that.. Now where do you list 'mothers for sale' on eBay?
I feel they were trying to evade copyright and as such these should possibly not be Fakers but a very good bass in their own right,I liked the MB it was a lot more transparent than the similar looking Gibson product....I am actually regretting selling mine in favour of keeping my Maya Telecaster bass......so much so that Im on the hunt for another Ibby, but good unabused examples are thin on the ground of late....
T :)
You're never bloody happy are you! :) Took you ages to sell that (would've had it myself if I'd had the money - or you'd let me have it cheap!) and now you want another one...

Fact is with these, they were - as far as I can make out - the first JapCrap Fakers on the market - probably around 1971 - which is why they had the full-width inlays & checked binding, both pre '72 Rickenbacker features. The mudbucker lookalikes (actually single-coils in big cases) were probably just what the factory had available when they tooled up the first production run. Fujigen (who made Ibanez) used Maxon pups in most things and at that point there wouldn't have been any proper Rick copy electronics available - or other hardware, for that matter, in fact the very early Fujigen 4001 copies had massive solid-cast tailpieces, more like the very early Rick ones than the subsequent hollow ones.

Anyway, they continued building them like this for about 5 years, but revised the design around 1976 to have "correct" 4001-type pups & small inlays. They still kept the checker binding, though. Ones like this are less common because Ibanez withdrew from selling copies around 1978 so the accurate Ibby Fakers were only around for a year or two.

Anyway, you do realise if one of these comes up cheap, you'll have a scrap on your hands!

No hands-on personally, but a few BCers have had them and feedback's generally good. I don't think any of the modern copies are actually bad (although I did play an Indie a few years ago & it felt cheap & shoddy, for the £500 asking price) but none of them are as accurate as the better MIJ examples - pups/hardware are wrong. neck proportions are out - and the Anniversary has too many frets!

Sorry if it's been discussed but out of interest what is this one?
It's about the prettiest one I've ever seen, and one of the most accurate.

I have no idea who made it - or even if it's MIJ, but it's a stunner.

Saw a couple of these today. I didn't know they made them!

They looked the part and felt pretty nice (bit heavy, I thought, but I've only handled a couple of real ones).

Are they any good? (Apologies if this has been answered before.)

Guitar & Bass magazine really rate Bass Collection's Jazz and Precision copies, but I've not seen a review of these.

(Why did the makers choose such a stupid brand name?)

I've not seen these before but as far as I can tell from the not-very-clear pics, they're identical to the current model of Rockinbetter, and most people who've played these rate them.

Had a look and there are 2 different versions of this available on The Bass Centre's site - the only difference being that the "Plus" version apparently has checker binding - you can't tell from the rubbish pics.

Both versions are spectacularly and ridiculously overpriced.

If you're thinking of buying a Faker though - buy this one. If it's not already sold.

It's very probably MIJ, and might be a Kasuga - but if so, not an exact model I've seen before.

Will you be up for whipping off the scratchplate & taking a few pics of pups/'tronics/body routing?

Lovely bass & a great score there. :)

Weird, maybe an ill advised attempt to get a truss rod working?

Any idea what it is Jon?

It was probably a Shaftesbury or maybe a Cimar, sorry, don't know who made these yet. My Fireglo Frankenbugger would have originally been the same as this - it's very good.

The truss on these adjusts with a nut rather than the usual allen key - my guess would be that some gimp chewed the wood out of this so they could get an adjustable spanner on the nut, rather than get the correct tool or a suitable size socket.
