The earliest ones are like the Ibby in copying the early 70s 4001 features - it has full-width inlays (sparkly stuff, rather than crushed pearl) and checked binding, but the pups are completely unauthentic - they're chrome "mudbucker" copies (actually single coil), suggesting that the factory simply used what was in production at the time. I think the Fujigen Gakki - built basses, like this Ibby, were the first Rick copies, none of the others have full-width inlays & only a few feature checked binding. I don't think any 4001 copies pre-date 72/73, when these features were phased out of real Ricks, so horseshoes wouldn't have been on the basses the Japanese factories were imitating. J.

Only with the recent demise of the 4001C64 and C64S have they passed into history again. Damn shame! I should've picked up a 4001v63 whilst they were still around.

Rather chunky bolt-on necks though. I am sure they feel and sound quite different from a Rick.

Never noticed it's a bolt-neck, either - the ones on the Bach site are neck-through: These actually got talked about on here a good few years ago, in fact I'm pretty sure one of the Bach guitars guys actually posted here a few times. There are rumours that reissue horsies may be available as a Rickenbacker 'boutique' purchase sometime down the line. I'm pretty sure the reissues don't work in the same way as the original ones. Cosmetically, they look the same, but they don't function in the same way (I don't think you'll find much magnetism in the 'shoes'). Being slightly 'on topic', I see one Chinese manufacturer was silly enough to include a faker in their display at NAMM, not a million miles away from RIC's own stand.

Bassassin Posted February 13, 2010 Posted February 13, 2010 That's a proper Ibby 2388b/DX (not a 2389 - that comes from a catalogue misprint, the 2389 was an Ampeg copy) and is in splendid condition, by the looks of it. This one's been on before (as the seller admits) and I'll be watching with interest - it will probably do very well. I've actually got one of those Wesleybacker things as an ongoing project - it's surprisingly well-made fro a Chinese cheapo. J.
