God that is awful. The pickup selector makes me feel a bit ill.

Looks a bit refinned & modded to me - never seen a Faker with black binding before & the seller describes it as "ropey". I'm inclined to think it's been replaced - as have the tuners, scratchplate & (obviously!) the TRC. Which is probably one o' them there Eye-talian counterfeits.

Probably should go check it out and make a crappy offer. Let me know the crappy offer and I'll send an insultingly lower one first, so they feel like they're scoring a good deal.

It's already got five bids with eight days to go. Possibly the owner might be resistant to low offers.

Edit: Up to £310 already! And there's over a week remaining.

(PS: Thanks for the offer of conspiracy :) )

Just wanted this opportunity to be all pretentious and say that I'm not going to be buying this TRC, even though it looks like it would fit my Cimar.

Does anyone believe the claim that this is a "factory reject" TRC? I can really imagine Rickenbacker selling off their reject TRCs cheaply. Not.

Easy to rob their bins though. I've got a bunch of high quality audiophile amp parts going if anyone is interested.

Absolute rot - it's a fake, probably cold-cast resin - which is why it doesn't have the "made in USA" lettering. Watch it get pulled.

Hi

Anyone ever heard of a copy rickenfaker from to 70s by the name of Norwegian Wood? I understand it is a jap copy and is selling for around 900 sing dollars (around £440.00)

Can't find any obvious reference on the web....

Never heard the name before, but Norwegian Wood will be a brand used by whoever imported it - most of the 70s JapCrap guitars & basses have importer names that are nothing to do with the actual manufacturer.

If you have a pic, I might be able to tell you which factory made it, & the price sounds pretty much what you'd expect to pay for a Jap Faker in good nick.

Same TRC turns up on my local gumtree. Looks the same, and the item locations match. They want £40 for it. The Gumtree ad claims that the "made in USA" has been scratched off, although there is no mention of this in the ebay listing that I can see. And the Gumtree ad says that it came off an old guitar broke by his friend in the 80s, while ebay says "factory reject".

Up to £430, and still over a day to go.

Is this what Jon was talking about when he said that sometimes Rickenfaker auctions just go silly? Or is it a lesson of the value of a low starting price?

Edit: Could it be Rickenbaker fans spoiling the auction?

Not sure about this one - the bass is pretty tatty but I think there might be a few people who've convinced themselves it's a real 4001 with black binding & parts - I don't think any Fakers had these as stock.

Interesting idea that it might be Rick fans shilling it with protest high bids - but I've seen this happen with other things (not basses!) & you'll usually get a pair of comedians bidding each other up £1000 at a time.

I think - so far - it's genuine bidding. Low starts do get more people interested & in my opinion are more likely to go high at the end.

I see the fake trc got pulled - and is now down to £30 on Glumtree! :)

Since it's unlabelled, how do we know it's a real Ibanez? I'm not doubting that it's a real Ibanez, just asking how you can tell.

I suppose technically we don't - but it's the same bass as the early Ibby 2388B/DX - through neck, full-width glittery inlays, checked binding & big chromey Gibson Mudbucker-alikes - which are in fact single-coils in big cases! These were some of the earliest 4001 copies made, hence the inlays & binding which were copied from pre-1973 Rickenbackers. Fujigen-made Rick copies looked like this from around 1971 up to 1975-ish, when details like pickups & inlays were updated to be more representative of mid-70s Rickenbacker design.

In the UK Fujigen copy-era guitars were mostly sold under the Ibanez, Antoria & CSL brands - and I've never seen an Antoria or CSL Rick copy. Doesn't mean they don't exist (they probably do) but it does suggest to me that Mr Digits is likely correct thinking this was originally an Ibby. :)

FWIW I wouldn't touch it without getting a look at the truss rod problem first-hand. Experience with these & other Fakers would make me wonder if it's neck-body joint deformation/delamination rather than the truss.

The massive neck mudbucker. In all mytime watching this thread, only noticed them on the Ibanez ones.

I hate the way he infers that he's not a trader & that they're all his personal basses. There's nothing wrong with being a trader just be upfront about it. His stuff is always well overpriced & a lot of it has some kind of issue. I wouldn't touch any of his stuff with a barge pole.
