Due to the way ebay's going, costs etc - cheekily plugging this. :)
Hope it's allowed (know it's not a bass)!

Just a CMI. There's no connection whatsoever between the brands. And isn't that CMI awfully like the one that was pulled a few weeks ago? An off-Ebay deal, I think, & I bet he paid less than £300 for it...

I think it's absolute madness that any of these things go for over £200! But that's market forces, innit? They're rare because a: they're 30 odd years old & were generally treated as throwaway crap back in the day; and b: Rickenbacker & their ever-vigilant supporter's club won't let us buy them! Rickenbacker's massive price hikes won't have exactly helped, either.

I think this looks like a nice one - CMI (which was a Marshall sub-brand, Cleartone Musical Instruments) were mostly good-quality copies, sourced from factories which included Moridaira, Kasuga & (I think) Fujigen, all of which had a good rep & made quality instruments. It's got a couple of issues he mentions - I don't like the sound of the dodgy bridge pup - but realistically what he's asking is about the ballpark these days for a good condition neckthrough.

Love the new avatar Jon.

Ha, vigilant's not the word. They've just removed my listing - despite not mentioning at all make or model, & only using a close up photo of the fretboard!

May challenge this, especially as they have reported me as a "Repeat Offender", which is bollocks.
Love the last line about ebay being 'safe & reputable' :)

because Rickenbacker International Corporation reported it to us for violating their intellectual property rights. When eBay is notified by a rights owner of an intellectual property rights infringement, eBay must remove the item in order to meet certain legal requirements.

Why did we remove your listing?

Trademark infringement is unlawful and breaches eBay's policies. A trademark is a unique sign (such as a name, word, phrase, logo, or symbol) that a company uses to identify its products and/or services.

Using another company's trademark in a way that may confuse buyers about the source of goods or services, or confuses buyers into believing that the seller is affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the trademark owner is both illegal and against eBay's policies. Examples include counterfeits, unauthorised replica items and items that bear the brand or logo of a company without that company's permission.

Guideline: If the product you are listing bears the brand or logo of a company, but it wasn't made or authorised by that company, don't sell it on eBay. The rights owner for the item you listed sent us a signed legal statement telling us that your item infringed their copyright, trademark or other rights. We were therefore legally obliged to remove the listing.

If you have any questions about the removal of your listing please contact the rights owners directly.

"The rights owner reported the following information:

Repeat offender.

Questions about the specific violation should be addressed to Rickenbacker International Corporation

Although there may be similar items currently listed on eBay, please be assured that your listings have not been targeted in any way. We review all listings that are reported to us by eBay members and participants in the VeRO (Verified Rights Owner) Programme, and we rely on these reports to help keep eBay a safe and reputable place to buy and sell

The bottom line is that Ebay can & will remove any listing they please - although it's arguable whether even the reason they give here is legally valid in the UK. I doubt you'll get anywhere - but it might be worth challenging it just to see what spurious justifications they can come up with.

Repeat offender? Guilty, several times over, M'lud! I've been canned a number of times for trying to sell Precision copies, Les Paul copies & Strat copies - and daring to state openly that that's what they are. Although it's interesting to see high turnover Ebay shops using the exact same trademark-violating descriptions with impunity - one rule for them, I guess. :)

Unfortunately Ebay's increasingly f@cked up & unfair these days - and that's why I'm sitting on a whole bunch of stuff I need to sell, but finding it hard to face the inevitable hassle I'll get when i do.

I did ask why my listing had been removed, just out of interest

"Dear Whom it may concern,

Could you please clarify as to why my listing was removed?
As neither Rickenbacker or model concerned was referred to in this listing or title, nor was there any detailed photo - it is to my understanding that the listing was well within Ebay rules regarding copyright infringement & any related laws.

I would be grateful, if you would be so kind to respond/advise(?)"

I got a reply!
"Totally irrelevant."

Regards,

John Hall
Chief Executive Officer

Rickenbacker Int'l Corp.
3895 S. Main Street
Santa Ana, CA. 92707

So I've responded, doubt I'll get anything back though :)

"Dear Mr. Hall,
Thank you for such a quick (albeit brief) response.
I presume that along with not breaking any VeRO codes laid out by Ebay, being incorrectly reported as a 'Repeat Offender'(!) (despite being my first removed listing) could also be considered "totally irrelevant"?
Regards...."

Oh well.... ;)

Much as I've tried to understand Rickenbacker's attitude towards the sale of copies, and the threat this poses to their trademarks - John Hall has done little to suggest he's anything more than an arrogant, obnoxious & thoroughly unreasonable little man.

Guess, I was hoping for a bit more of an articulate response...don't know why, but I'm half expecting some 'shock & awe' now! :)

Anyway, it seems that if you mention Lennon,Townsend,Marr,Weller...in a guitar listing, you're pretty much gonna incur the wrath of Big John -

Quite right - but by the same token Ebay can do what they please with their own website - which evidently includes treating their customers like crap to placate the likes of Hall.

Check this one out quick, before it vanishes:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ibanez-Bass-rickenba...emZ120255130703

Once you've stopped choking on your incredulity at the price - this one's really odd. Obviously it's not an Ibanez - but I'm not even sure it's JapCrap at all - never seen a bridge like that, or bridge pickup like that. It has lots of genuine Rick parts - including the jack plate - the serial number here is where he gets the 1969 from - that's a '69 genuine Rick plate. In addition, it has new Rick tuners and quite possibly a real toaster & trc.

As for what it is - it's in Italy, and I think that's where it's from:

http://www.fetishguitars.com/html/italiane/gherson/4.html

Not the best pic - but the bridge - particularly those odd saddles - looks very similar.

TallyCrap, then? :)

Despite having passing GAS for a Ricky, I would now rather go without than do anything which might, at any point, be of advantage to Mr Hall. I'm sure his attitude loses more custom than just mine.... :)

Here's a Hondo, been dragged out of a skip:

Although a 99p start, 3-day list & poor ad title means this might be a nice bargain project. Collection only, so I'm out. :)

Guess that confirms the one I've just bought is a Hondo :) I'd buy it for spares but it's four hours away.

Has yours turned up yet? Realistically there were quite a lot of Fireglo finish Rickenfakers with very similar components - those little tuners appeared on about 10,000 different Oriental basses in the 70s - as well as on Shergold Marathons! The other parts are very generic - and accurate - 70s Rick copy components.

Plywood would confirm it as a Hondo though...

No :)

Cheque cleared Monday, was told she'd have it ready to go. If it doesn't arrive today I'll email her, although it's clear from her feedback that she's having a baby and I don't know how far along she is with that! So I'm not pushing too hard, excuse the pun...

They should probably think about removing the listing, then - people are still bidding on it.

I'm already looking forward to seeing it come back, with a set of 3 quid strings and a £400 price tag... :)

Wasn't you, was it?

If so, I applaud you; if not, join me in crying bitterly.

Out of sheer brass neck-ness, I messaged the seller & asked how much it was sold for.

I wish I hadn't.

The bass, and the Strat copy for sale as well, were sold for fifty quid. For the pair.

 x 1000000.
