Top edge of the bridge pup - it stands about 5mm proud of the surround. When I had the original ring on I tended to end up doing the same, with my thumb poked in the hole. So to speak...

I have a pickguardian baseplate part of the cover somewhere in my parts box, but i'd rather keep it as its part of my ric's history- IE it wouldn't be worth me selling it for the amount you can get a new one for. I'm pretty sure half of it is missing anyway

I'm extremely limited on internet time at the mo- but i like the sound of these pickup surrounds with a "dip" as my rick really could do with one, when i get giddy on my G string (ooerrr) i clank it on the cover, and dont want to re-fit the pickguardian one as i sometimes anchor off the surround depending what i'm playing. I'll be back for a look folks

I've never found the genuine Ric pickups to be stable enough to actually rest your thumb on ... those spring-loaded support screws mean that the damned things wobble if you push them.

As to your eBay spot, 'strordinary what turns up on the [i]Just Too Late[/i] system of purchasing. If it stays cheap enough I might buy it anyway, just in case.

If you hadn't highlighted that one, I'd be wondering if it's real.

That maple doesn't look like anything I've ever seen on a Ric before (not that I've made a life's study of them, you understand), non-standard bridge and pickups, pickguard could just as easily be an after-market item.

And why so CHEAP?

The wood does look a bit messy for a natural-finish Rick - however the only thing that would make me suspect is that it might have been a solid finish originally.

Again this has features you just don't see on copies: black binding, no skunk stripe, 1" pickup gap etc. The bridge is a recent Hipshot and he's providing the original (black) one with the bass. The pic shows it's the mid-80s 7-screw type too.

As for why it's that cheap - either he needs the cash really urgently, or he's wildly out of touch with current Rick pricing.

Academic anyway now cos it's gorn. Expect to see it back in a month or so starting at £1200. :ph34r:

If it was me I'd keep them all.

Anyway, he says Maya or Greco - based on the fact that they are known to have sold 4001S / 1999 copies, but it could also be a Kasuga. They sold one under their Heerby brand in Japan, and it was probably exported in different guises. From his choices I'd go for Maya, because Greco was never exported to the UK - never officially exported anywhere, for that matter.

And he's wrong about Maya being "another importer brand" as any fule kno.

This was originally flagged up here a month ago and I remember it going to him - he pipped a mate to post, so I knew it would only be a matter of time before it appeared again. I reckon he must be half the reason why the market in 'fakers is so buoyant...

Not a bad price considering what these things have been known to go for on the Bay.

Judging from the blank, elongated neck plate, it's a Hondo, an edge-view of the body would confirm it - it'll be ply. The chip off the back edge looks like it's the top veneer which would bear this out.

Dealt with this guy before, he is down the road from me. He pulls down auctions if he doesn't like the price that is reached, hence I don't deal with him.

I thought the starting price was optimistic, and then I saw the BIN! Mind you, that other Hondo is up to £310 with over 3 days to go. Quite ridiculous when you consider how much more accurate fakers have been going for recently.

Bloody hell - that's the most expensive bit of Korean plywood I've ever seen!

"Semi-set neck". Means the neck's glued in as well as being bolted on. You see this quite a lot on bolt-neck Rickenbuggers, because the neck/body joint is inevitably weak because of the thin body, lack of inset where the neck meets body - and an absolutely [b]huge[/b] route for the neck pup right on the joint. So they break there, and have to be glued back together.

So it's Korean, plywood, broken & glued back together, if the action's 2cm off the board there's f@ck-all you can do about it because you can't shim it, there are no pics & he's not offering to send any. All for £600. Wow.

Looks a real nice bass I'd imagine if it gets to the end without getting pulled it will go for a fair wedge with Christmas money around and a 10 day auction .
