Well Hondos are pretty much considered the bottom end of the Rickenfaker market - plywood, Korean made and generally not up to the quality of the Japanese stuff in the 70's.

That said, it's relatively tidy and if it doesn't go too much beyond the starting price could be worth a punt. The bolt on neck can be a blessing in disguise, as some through neck Rickenfakers can suffer from a high action that can only be solved by some major bodging.

If you're thinking about going for it, it's very much worth your while contacting the guy so that you've got a record of his email. Although the listing doesn't contain the 'R' word, if John Hall spots it he'll pull the auction. That way, if it does disappear, you might be able to tempt the guy with a deal outside of ebay.

Edit: Just noticed that he's included his email in the listing, so he might angling for an deal off ebay anyway.

You could try this. It's also available in fireglo, and there's a thread that mentions them here (hooky6stringbass bass bought one). Unfortunately it seems the price has jumped up £40 in the past few weeks since I last looked. HWAudio are doing them for the same price.

Since you're only down the road from the guy selling the Hondo, why not ask if he'd be OK for you to go round & have a tryout? He might well be prepared to do a cash deal off-Ebay, he plainly knows the problems that selling one can involve - I'm pretty sure this one's been on before & was pulled.

Thanks J, in the process.
So jealous of you, having a Kasuga. Still have photo on wall from 1980, brandishing mine at a 5000+ outdoor gig in Darlington.
Had 3 real R's since, all long gone, but the Kasuga is still remembered as the best. Cost £110 on HP she did. Sold her in 85 to buy Gibbo Explorer bass.
Happy days.

You missed a lovely Fireglo Kasuga a couple of weeks back - for some reason the listing's gone now but there are pics of it here:

You should put your pic from 1980 on there. :)

Look forward to it!

Here's another Hondo, with a black refin that would probably scratch off in half an hour:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=390066883099

This one uses the "R" word so will probably get pulled, contacting the seller to get their username is probably a good idea for interested parties.

Hello folks.
I've been lurking for a few weeks, as yet another person hoping to acquire a decent Rick copy at some point.
Don't think this little fella has been posted yet. Ending in a couple of days.
I live too far away to even have a look at it. Love mapleglo, though.

Welcome to the forum.

That on came up on a previous auction a month ago, at an eye watering £1000 starting price. :)

He's got a bit more realistic now, but £500 is still a lot to open bidding for an Ibby in that kind of condition. I still reckon he's living on another planet, but at least he's in the right solar system this time round.

Cheers, Musky.

That guy's single mindedness in terms of round figures is a joy to behold, though, eh? :D
£250 next time? :)

Speaking of those Jayro/Anniversary copies - I have one. After the fine reviews by Hooky and Footos the only things I could add [being an unreconstructed old tech dunce] is that the extra 2 frets are mighty useful if you go for top end noodling, but that in contrast to Ricks and most other copies the Jayro's set neck/body join is 'stepped'. As a top end noodler I love that Rick neckthrough and that's the only misgiving I have about the 'playability' of the Jayro, even if the neck top end also seems a tad wider than Ricks I remember. And that's why I'm after an old copy, still.

That crack in the back of the Ibanez will be the neck slowly creeping forwards due to the pickup cavity being too close to the end of the fingerboard. As it creeps, the neck angle will be changing and the action getting higher and higher. It happened to one I used to own - there just isn't much gluing surface with that huge pickup rout there. And the pickup on mine was a skinny little single coil under the cover anyway - what were they thinking when they chose that pickup for this bass?

They're terrible copies, so I wouldn't bother thinking about pick ups. Just send it to me, and I'll give you £50 for your trouble. :)

Real Ricks were prone to this - possibly why the pickup was moved on later ones - and my Matsumoku copy has flexed at this point (no cracks) & has a very high action. All just symptomatic of 35-odd years of string tension, and other than filing down saddles & sinking bridges into bodies, there's not a lot can be done about it.

Ironically the bolt-neck Ibanez has a sensible-sized neck pup, the same as the bridge unit on this bass.

ChrisAngryman - got any pics of your CMI?

Nice buy at that kind of money! You're certainly not going to lose out if you don't get along with it.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the expense of a rewind as there's no guarantee it would improve things substantially and you'd never recoup the expense.
