I would love to bid on this but as its in Italy and needs to be shipped over and it has an unspecified neck problem I'll give it a miss. If it was a bolt on I'd feel more confident as it may be easier to fix - pity these dont seem to come up that often

Hello,
Unfortunatelly the neck is not straight, there is a large bow along it, and the action is very high.
Thanks,

If one of these replicas included a replica of the horseshoe bridge pickup, then I'd be interested. Especially if it had a stereo output.

Know what I mean?
None of them had horseshoes, although many have stereo outputs. The earliest ones are like the Ibby in copying the early 70s 4001 features - it has full-width inlays (sparkly stuff, rather than crushed pearl) and checked binding, but the pups are completely unauthentic - they're chrome "mudbucker" copies (actually single coil), suggesting that the factory simply used what was in production at the time.

I think the Fujigen Gakki - built basses, like this Ibby, were the first Rick copies, none of the others have full-width inlays & only a few feature checked binding. I don't think any 4001 copies pre-date 72/73, when these features were phased out of real Ricks, so horseshoes wouldn't have been on the basses the Japanese factories were imitating.

The horseshoes have been available on stock Rickenbackers for years now. Only with the recent demise of the 4001C64 and C64S have they passed into history again.

Damn shame!

I should've picked up a 4001v63 whilst they were still around.
Made by Weifang Hongyun, in China.

I think I feel an import business coming on... :brow:
They seem amenable to the idea of overseas partners:
Hongyun Musical Instrument is in-phase with the world, let’s create together the refulgence of the career
So, if you're up for having your career refulged, they're the ones to do it.

Not sure what postage from the Czech Republic would be, but they're somewhat cheaper new, direct from BaCH That's about £240.

I like these, quite a lot... :brow:

Different pickups on their own website, aren't they. The example on eBay has (what look like) toasters.

They are rather pretty aren't they? Rather chunky bolt-on necks though. I am sure they feel and sound quite different from a Rick.

I think this is one of the earlier ones - it's got a different bridge too. Never noticed it's a bolt-neck, either - the ones on the Bach site are neck-through:

These actually got talked about on here a good few years ago, in fact I'm pretty sure one of the Bach guitars guys actually posted here a few times. Annoyingly the basses were a hell of a lot cheaper then too. But then again, the Pound was a bit less crap against other currencies at the time!

These are through-neck, not bolt-on:
The one on eBay is definitely bolt on:-

It is - Matsumoku-built, mid 70s bolt-neck, from Aria's Diamond sub-brand. Pickups aren't original but looks like a very good score for £250, or whatever he could be haggled down to.

Haven't you got a reissue one on your CS?

There are rumours that reissue horsies may be available as a Rickenbacker 'boutique' purchase sometime down the line. I'm pretty sure the reissues don't work in the same way as the original ones. Cosmetically, they look the same, but they don't function in the same way (I don't think you'll find much magnetism in the 'shoes').

Being slightly 'on topic', I see one Chinese manufacturer was silly enough to include a faker in their display at NAMM, not a million miles away from RIC's own stand.

There's one of these on my local Glumtree for £70. Which is a tiny bit more realistic, considering it's a Wesley & cost £99 new!

I like the look of that one. (The Ric-ish copy found by Mr. Foxen).

But, back to business. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rare-1974-Ibanez-238...=item335a28e551

Is this really an Ibanez rather than an "Ibanez" (with quotes, e.g. "made in the Ibanez factory" (sic)?)

That's a proper Ibby 2388b/DX (not a 2389 - that comes from a catalogue misprint, the 2389 was an Ampeg copy) and is in splendid condition, by the looks of it.

This one's been on before (as the seller admits) and I'll be watching with interest - it will probably do very well.

I've actually got one of those Wesleybacker things as an ongoing project - it's surprisingly well-made fro a Chinese cheapo.
