There aren't any black-bound copies, as far as I know, certainly not from the 70s era because there were no black-bound 4001s to copy. This is the same "modified" one that's popped up a few times in the last couple of months:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4001-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270563145415

And old Uncle Ash is trying to flip it for a poxy £50 profit - or more like £15 after Ebay Tax. It must be a total dog.

Yeah that does seem a very quick turn around for the bass. There must be something wrong with it.

This is a murky world I've entered! :)

I notice he's changed the truss rod cover as well. Doubtless that will be up for sale before too long.

Indeed. Although they may be fibbing.

Anyway, what exactly are these like? Do they play/sound nice?

There is absolutely zero evidence that the Rockinbetter Basses are made by Tokai except in the imaginations of those trying to sell them who hope to increase to price through brand association.

Tokai have made copies of Rickenbacker guitars in the past but they always sported the Tokai logo on the TRC, so there is no reason for the basses to be treated differently.

I wrote a review of the Rockinbetters here

The newer Rockinbetters are a lot better in terms of bridge and neck pup placement have a look on my facebook group here

That looks nice!

If the QC and playability could be confirmed I'd be interested.

Any Lost-watching bass guitarists should buy two, one white, one black.

Oh god - only 4 episodes of the final season left...

Yes, I am a really bad person.

So - white/black bound/set neck Faker for cheap? I really like that, imo it p!sses all over the Rockinbetters & Anniversarys aesthetically, and I think the fat MM 'buckers look really good.

Dammit - I want one!

Bath ain't far, and I'm jobless, if people had a whip round for my train fare, I'd go check them out and write up copious notes.

Are these a brand new? I've never seen one before.
These are new - they don't seem to be related to any of the other current copies - the other setneck ones (as opposed to neck through) have too many frets.

I think the guy who's selling/importing them should be made aware of this thread & should give us a review example. :)
