Shaftesbury. Not a 4001/4003 model. I don't know what model number this bass reproduces. (hint hint: I hope someone tells me :) )

Low starting price. Pick up only in Surrey.

It's not actually a reproduction of a bass, but it's based on the 330 guitar. The fact that rickenbacker never produced a bass like this doesn't seem to stop Mr. Hall pulling the auctions though. :)

I have the book of john entwistle's bass collection... he has a rickenbacker bass model 31 which is what this is based on. Looks lovely too!
Or the 4005

I didn't know Entwistle had used one of these. Then again he seems to have owned virtually every model of bass ever made, so it should come as no surprise.

Are some digits missing from that model number?

Edit: I've just realised that you said he owned the Rickenbacker version - I'll have to take back what I said about him owning every model of bass. :)

it's in the book as a model 31, he had 2. The 4005 looks similar. You would have to ask someone with knowledge the difference, I just have a picture book!

I'd love to know how they rationalise stuff like that! From what I've seen so far, Tokai haven't sold a Rick bass copy under their own brand so it would seem odd that they would have built them for a US importer's brand.

However, just because I've never seen a Tokai Rick bass copy (including Rockinbetters) doesn't mean they don't exist. Or that Ebay Guy's making it up.

But he probably is.

Definitely - and in great nick too by the looks of it. This looks like the same sort of thing as the Shaftesburys, Cimars (ask Mr Twit!) & some of the CMIs that turn up. Very nice, the only thing that lets them down (aesthetically, at least) is the silly little tuners.

This one didn't shift on its last listing so might be worth a look this time around:

Matsumoku bolt-neck, presumably originally badged Arbiter. Looks in very good condition, very sensible BIN or if you're a gambler, drop a £269 punt on at the last second, because that's his reserve.

If I had the dosh/room I would. :)

This is near me. I'm not sure I need another one though.

The shop where I bought my Cimar has an Indie Rickenfaker in.

Didn't Hondo use those extra tree strings to get enough break angle for the strings, over the nut?
Or perhaps, as ever, I have lost reality.

It's the home-made looking Taiwanese Kays that had them - just like the one I saw in Denmark Street at the weekend, priced at £295! :) Although obviously this suffers the same problem.

This is a Hondo though, and the Schaller (I think) tuners it's wearing are probably the best thing about it.

I wonder where he thinks you can get replacement Rick-type pickups "cheaply enough"?

J.[/quote]I had a similar looking ElDegas in the very late80,s or possibly even 1990,the chap I bought if from said it was only 6 months or so old...its my beleif these were made by Samick in Korea and not at the Matsomuku Japan plant as I think that had gone by then,,,there are rumours that theres a Samick /Westone connection but we all know about rumours.....
Well it was basically as good as an Ibanez in general build quality the paint finish was not great but the pickups were attrocious.

I sold it on loot when that first started so thats going back some

but heres some piccys of a rather nice playing copy....

I'm guessing that this isn't genuine. What's going on around where the thru neck joins the body, as you can see on the back? What are those holes, and surely that's not Rick workmanship in fitting the wings?

Single truss is a bad sign I think. They did have problems with the neck collapsing into the pickup cavity doing that though.

Posted

You do see the delaminating wings thing on real Ricks - a consequence of that big route at the end of the neck & being strung with high tension rounds. I think this is why the neck pup was moved on Ricks in the mid 70s - shame the copy builders didn't do the same thing.

This thing looks like a badly refinished fireglo copy (check the truss rod route) and the guy reckons the screwholes were where someone fitted a "bracket" in a failed attempt to pull the neck back.

All that & it still manages to reach £245, & counting.
